Amy Adams to Make New York Stage Debut in 'Into the Woods'
The Oscar-nominated actress will play the Baker's Wife this summer in the Public Theater revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's 1986 musical fairy-tale mashup.
NEW YORK -- Having shown off her singing chops in The Muppets and Disney's Enchanted, Amy Adams will get to warble on stage this summer in the Public Theater's 50th anniversary Shakespeare in the Park production of Into the Woods.
The 1986 show, which weaves characters from classic fairy tales into a new story, has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It will begin previews July 23 with the official opening set for Aug. 9. The limited engagement plays through Aug. 25 at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. Directed by Timothy Sheader, with co-direction by Liam Steel, the production marks Adams' New York stage debut.
The Public also announced Tuesday that Oliver Platt would join the cast of As You Like It, the first entry in the summer's Shakespeare in the Park season, running June 5-30. Platt will play Touchstone in the comedy, with Daniel Sullivan directing a cast that also includes Lily Rabe (American Horror Story) and Renee Elise Goldsberry (The Good Wife). Steve Martin is composing an original banjo score for the production, which shifts the Forest of Arden to the rural American South in the 1840s, and will feature a live bluegrass band.
Adams was nominated for Academy Awards for her work in Junebug, Doubt and The Fighter. Her upcoming features include Zach Snyder's Superman: Man of Steel, Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master and Walter Salles' On the Road, which is tipped to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
