Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem has had a very difficult run since entering the UFC, and it has nothing to do with competing inside the Octagon.After defeating Brock Lesnar and becoming the No. 1 contender, Overeem failed a pre-fight drug test. When he was asked to appear in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission in regards to the test - and in hopes of acquiring his fight license - he was denied and not allowed to re-apply for nine months.
Well, after remaining quiet on the matter, Overeem appeared on UFC Tonight this past Tuesday to try and clear the air a little. "The Reem" will be able to seek his license in December of this year, and plans to do so in hopes of fighting on the annual New Year's card the UFC puts on.
"When I had the positive test results, I didn't even know what that was and I didn't want to talk about something I didn't know about," Overeem said. "So we sat back and researched the whole topic. The positive test came as a surprise to me and everyone, and by the time we researched it, we figured we would just explain the situation in front of the commission."
Overeem re-iterated that the positive test was due to a spike in medication given to him by a licensed doctor, adding, "I took responsibility and stepped away from the title fight." Overeem was removed from facing Junior dos Santos for the UFC title, with Frank Mir being inserted in his place.
Overeem also said he has not spoken with UFC president Dana White, but believes being part of Authentic Sports Management will help him get the best care possible.
"We have a far better medical staff that advises me on treatments," Overeem said. "I didn't have that before. I am sure that this cannot happen again."
While he hopes to face dos Santos for the belt upon his return, Overeem admits that is up to the UFC to decide. Cain Velasquez has been mentioned as the next likely opponent for "Cigano," with the bout taking place later this year.
"For me, it doesn't matter who I fight; I want to fight for the title," Overeem said. "The title is my goal. Then I will have all the titles in the world. I think I'm No. 1 (contender), but it's not for me to decide."
