When Thiago Silva was forced off the UFC 149 card late last week, many people felt that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua should face off with rising Swedish star Alexander Gustafsson. Well according to a post on Shogun's official Facebook page, there's a very good reason why Gustafsson isn't taking the fight - he's injured, and won't be back until the fall:

Quote:

The name Rashad Evans has been talked about but he is injured. Same goes for Minotouro. Gustafsson was another option but it seems like he has a broken hand and will only be back in October. For us the only options left at the time are Phil Davis, who is fighting Wagner Caldeirão in August, and Ryan Bader, who is fighting Lyoto in the same event. But I still believe these fights can be rearranged. UFC 149 is pay-per-view and the one on Aug. 4th is open TV in the US.

All of these injuries are fucking insane. Never seen it this bad before where so many top talents are getting injured.

What is the deal with the broken hands as well? Ridiculous run of injuries. Disappointed that Gustafsson is out because I have been impressed by him lately and a fight against Shogun would have been a great test.

Fight with Shogun would've been great. Honestly think they should do Shogun vs Machida III as the co-mainevent for 149. that leaves Ryan Bader without an opponent though for UFC On Fox 4. So i don't know. It's crazy.

I wouldn't want to be Joe Silva at the moment, would be really hard trying to book cards because currently a couple of fights are having to be changed on each card and then that messes up the next card and the one after that. I can't remember a worse run with injuries in UFC history.

Damn that sucks, I actually like Gustafsson. Hope he has a speedy recovery but October... Fair while.

Lots of injuries happening which isn't a good thing but it is MMA and it's bound to happen.

It sucks, but somehow they manage to make it all work so we'll see what they come up with. And honestly as long as nothing else happens to the UFC 148 card specifically Sonnen-Silva, I'll be a happy man.

Gustafsson came out today and said he was injured, but would be back before October. Said late August is what he's shooting for.
