San Antonio police say they've busted an alleged human smuggling operation not far from the heart of downtown.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers had 20 victims and two suspects in custody Monday.
Police received a call for suspicious vehicles parked outside a residence in the 200 block of Southolme Ave. just after 1:20 a.m. Monday.
Investigators found 20 victims of human smuggling inside the residence. The people were all lying on the floor. Authorities said the home does not have electricity or even running water.
Police arrested two suspects and found more than $3,000 in cash and a ledger that officers said documented the names of the smuggling victims and the amounts owed for bringing them to the United States.
ICE agents took photographs of the victims and seized cell phones.
The agents brought three women and 17 men into custody and relocated the immigrants to their facility in Windcrest. It is anticipated that they will be deported within the next 48 hours.
Authorities report they have not yet identified any suspected alien smugglers.
