    I didn't know of any law specifically saying certain people couldn't get married. There were laws defining what marriage is however.

    That is your interpretation. I along with many Constitutional and legal scholars disagree. You can't just use a vague interpretation to justify it. That same argument could be said for many things. Some people might think it is their 'liberty' to speed and no state can make laws against it.
