Opening with Vader/Shamrock is a damn strong opening match for sure. Glad the two of them just got to beat the hell out of each other. I'll just touch on it all at once here and say everything involving Vader/Mankind was solid tonight, including their later confrontation and Mankind's promo. I wanted to pay a little more attention to Triple H/Shamrock though. I'm just a big fan of considering where we are in the year that now Triple H is getting a chance to prove that he can do some damage without Chyna and Perfect doing his dirty work. Everything here ticked the box for some final hype prior to Summerslam.
Bret's promo here was fine, nothing really new as opposed to repeating his schtick but that's okay. I thought the angle of will Austin be able to compete after Pillman's first attack was played out well throughout the night. Kind of gave the viewer an early hook to follow throughout the show. I also like the fact we got this Austin/Pillman main event because it's something that was never really finished in real life as it should be. Slaughter helping Austin but Austin not caring for it is such a Stone Cold thing, and the ending with the attack from Bret is good, setting up a weakness for him to target at Summerslam. More good work here.
Brian Christopher is honestly just the perfect heel for this Light Heavyweight Division right now. Looks like we might get a tag match based off of what happened on this show which was solid enough.
Juvi being able to drop Awesome here is smart booking. Gives him hope and momentum even if we all know Awesome isn't losing at Summerslam.
Not commenting on the competition stuff although Mero inserting himself in front of Sable during their entrance is noted.
Paul Bearer's promo was fine. Again, not much to say as it's not all that different to what actually happened in real life. I enjoyed the Michaels promo a lot more, especially the audacity to give 'Taker a hard time about his family. I thought this did a good job to portray the hatred, and clever how Shawn managed to circle it all back to being about his desire for the title and how he doesn't care about anything else. Really good.
My only real qualm for the night is probably the aftermath of The Patriot's win. The Hart Foundation and the Americans all getting involved was fine, I just didn't like Goldust's promo. I understand he's trying to get at Bulldog, which worked, but I don't really get how Goldust is going to talk about kissing another man's wife, and Marlena be like okay cool, here's a hug. I get what you're going for that just feels like a really strange character reaction to me.
I think I might have mentioned when you first started the Gang Wars stuff that I was a little concerned because of how dull it was in real life. You've done a good job of keeping the Nation fresh, but it still kind of feels like we're getting very basic "you attack me, I attack you" type stuff from this feud now. Unless Scorpio is going to carry every match the Nation is in, I can feel this getting old and dull fairly quickly post Summerslam.
LOD/Godwinns isn't exactly a feud to write home about but it makes complete sense right now. Headbangers being the sacrificial lambs of sorts worked here.
I'm curious to see how you use Sniper and Recon after their failed run in real life. I'm even more intrigued to know who The Commander is.
Anyway, a pretty strong episode of Raw for the most part. Did a good job of getting me more pumped for Summerslam to.
