25 Years Ago Today, Adam Petty was tragically killed in a practice crash for the then Busch Series at New Hampshire. The first of 3 deaths in 2000, and the first of 4 in 9 months time.

That was such a weird time in NASCAR. I remember it all so well.

It really was, then if you go to October of 01, we had another one with a death in ARCA. Which that is when alot of changes was actually made. Lot of people think it was Earnhardt, which it did kick start somethings. But after Blaise Alexander was the fourth to die of a Basilar skull fracture in such a short amount of time, was when the HANS was made mandatory.

He had notoriously refused to wear one, even though it was "required." But when he died, that's when they basically decided that no one was going to be able to refuse.

See people remember it like that, but yeah they didn't actually mandate it until the ARCA wreck that killed Blaise Alexander, which oddly enough had an Earnhardt involved, Kerry.
