Long buildups are almost gone. They have been killed and taken from the planet, dumped off on some planet out of our galaxy, possibly to never return.

Why? Because apparently shocking the crowd is now more important than a long build to an emotional match. TNA and WWE both now seem to swerve for the sake of swerving. The most builtup thing seems to be Orton vs Triple H @ WM (well, it looks like going that way) with the whole McMahon thing. But even that seems to be booked to be 'unexpected' and as some kind of 'swerve'. TNA meanwhile seems to be booking the breakup of the MEM. Don't be surprised if that's a swerve too.

The days of booking in advance seem to be past. Now the viewers have to be shocked at every turn instead of drawn in emotionally. Quite honestly, it sucks.

Thoughts?

Yeah I agree. The shock factor's good but not every single angle needs it. I can't comment on TNA as I don't watch it anymore but it does seem like everything is a swerve and twist. Although, I'd rather unpredictable than predictable tbh so in a way I don't mind it.

I don't know, It's been lacking for a bit, but I think the Jericho/HBK feud was top notch. But that's the only recent one I can think of. But yes, there are too many twists, and half don't even make sense anymore. Some work decently, like Orton winning at WM24, but there are others which I don't like, such as Edge going into the WHC chamber as a ploy to get HHH back on RAW.

the build up in the past were very long because the wwf had only 4 ppvs a year..They can't go with the same card for three or four monthes, and that's a bad thing

Jeff Hardy's rise to the WWE Title is another one, which while quick, was also a very nice storyline. Too bad it ended back up on Triple H now. >__>

Hardcastle, the amount of time they have been PPV's shouldn't make much difference. Look at Batista vs Triple H. They were able to make Batista a babyface with a nice, long stoiryline. Nowadays they'd have probably dropped it just to swerve the audience.

I guess this has to do with Vince wanting to prove the smarks wrong.

It wasn't that quick. He had his first match for the title at the 08 Rumble I believe. He finally won it at Armageddon. That's 11 months. But I believe they really started building it around August.

The buildup started August/September really. The January one wasn't part of the storyline, though that was a very good feud.

There was me thinking that things had been consistently getting better over the last 18 months.

HBK/Jericho
HBK/JBL
Edge/Taker
Orton/The 'Macs & HHH
Jeff wins gold
Flair's retirement
Matt Hardy/MVP
(and that's not including those that failed and/or were abandoned Like Kane & Rey, Punk v Regal and so on....)

2008 was THE SHIT...

While I'll agree some of those were slowly built, only a few of them were good enough to create genuine emotion. Jeff, HBK's and Flair's were all good, but there were a lot of things that seemed like swerves just to bve swerves. You even listed one yourself with Kane/Rey.

I listed Kane/Rey as a failed angle.

I don't see any swerves amongst my main list.

Airfixx does make some good points and sucessful wwe storylines. BUT some of those were a LONG time ago (MVP/Hardy, Flair's retirement) Plus there is 3 Brands. There should be more than 7 good storylines out of 3 BRANDS in the course of a year and half.

I do feel TNA does a better job at this than wwe. Certainly some storylines move fast in TNA, while others are slow builds. Which is one thing i do like about TNA at the moment. I think Bound for Glory is a good example of how TNA does a good job at booking their #1 show. Certainly they don't have the history of the wwe, but generally they go all out for BFG, where as, the wwe just wants to draw #'s.

I know everyone won't agree with this, but thats the way i see it.

Think about the length of some of the fueds I mentioned.... A number of them clocked up a good 5 or 6 months of activity. Over an (approx) 18 month period, I think the list I have made acheives a pretty substantial coverage of said time period.

Sure even more would be cool, but not to the point where there's no shorter term angles anymore. The product would end up too dry and predictable.

As for ECW, I actually prefer there not to be much in the way of elaborate storylines on ECW... To me it kinda fits the concept of the show... Young guys competing to break through onto the main shows. (Sure this could still lead to dastardly heeldom from some, but in the kayfaybe of it all, at that stage in their careers you'd assume they had a bit more faith in their own abilities.)

Compared to 2007, where the longest feud (if you can call it that) was the crock of shit known as Batista vs Undertaker and the next closest being Orton vs Cena, which clocked up a grand total of 2 months, I think WWE did pretty well in 2008.

I blame the widespread knowledge of wrestling being staged. Fans don't want to tune in to see if the face can get revenge on the heel like they did back in the 70s/80s, and they certainly aren't going to sit for months watching him try to. Also, fans attention spans are a lot shorter nowadays. A title run goes for more than 4 months and people start shitting all over it, same with a lot of feuds.
