Indeed, it is true. Instead of releasing Mortal Kombat 8, Midway has instead announced that the next installment of the MK series will be a spin-off.

So far, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Batman and Superman have been confirmed for the game. Unlike previous MK games, this one will NOT be rated Mature, instead it will carry a Teen rating. The game will retain the same dark atmosphere from the MK series, and Midway promises that despite the Teen rating, they'll add as much blood and bone crunching hits as possible. There won't be Fatalities (No Sub-Zero ripping out spines) but it will have finishers for each character.

The game is scheduled for release in the fall of this year for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Also, here's a trailer for the game.

probably not...
since they can pick only 10 characters and 2 of them are Scorpion and Sub-zero, they'll pick only major ones. Shao Kahn, Reptile, Goro... the only females who have a chance to be in are Kitana, Mileena or Sonya

edit: the most recent announcement says there will be fatalities

The Full Character Roster has been revealed.

Mortal Kombat Characters: Scorpion,Sub-Zero,Sonya,Jax,Shang Tsung,Liu Kang,Raiden,Kitana,Kano,Baraka, and Shao Kahn.

DC Universe Characters: Batman,Superman,Catwoman,Green Lantern,The Joker,Shazam,The Flash,Wonder Woman,Deathstroke,Lex Luthor, and Darksied.

What the fuck! No Reptile? Bullshit he's my favorite character. Still gotta get the game because of Flash,Batman,Superman and Green Lantern. But it's gonna be a while because the line up for games is fucking stacked.

I'm a bit dissapointed with the MK lineup. They just decided to go with the generic characters, instead of incorporating some of the more recent ones.

Still, I'll probably pick this up when it comes out.
