I can't WWE seriously when they give guys "broken backs" and have them return a few days or weeks later.

No it's not a broken back. wwe.com said that after the doctor examined back he found a herniated disk. He said that no surgery is required. Physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication.
I guess the creative team realized that if he has a broken back then he will have to be out for eight months
