I know a lot of bad can be said about people in the reality/exploitation business, but as a kid who grew up in the Deep South it wasn't that far off the mark. We like hiding the ugly parts of the human condition and his time and culture rebelled against that.

I don't know his political choices or his work outside of talk shows, but I will remember him best for his Final Thought segments and for the wonderfully gonzo Dr. Evil bit in The Spy Who Shagged Me.

His Final Thought segment was always my favorite part of the show. Very positive endings, and just all around great speeches. Then to finish with “til next time, take care of yourself and each other.”
