Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo signs with UFC, meets Scott Jorgensen at UFC 177

When Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo pulled out of the headliner of next month’s Legacy FC 34 event, the speculation quickly started up about his future – potentially in the UFC.

As expected, Cejudo (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) now officially is in the fold with the world’s largest promotion, and is set to face Scott Jorgensen (15-9 MMA, 4-5 UFC) next month at UFC 177. UFC officials announced the new bout late Friday.

UFC 177 takes place Aug. 30 at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif. The event’s main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Cejudo will be looking to successfully make flyweight for the first time in MMA. He failed twice before, even though he wrestled in the Olympics at 121 pounds. Cejudo started his MMA career in March 2013 and won four straight in the first round. But with Legacy, he had a pair of decision wins. In October 2013, he outpointed Ryan Hollis. In January, his first try at flyweight, he missed weight, but beat Elias Garcia.

In June, he was slated to fight Damacio Page for Legacy FC’s flyweight title. But he withdrew from the fight for undisclosed reasons. He was supposed to return at Legacy FC 34, but now will take his game to the UFC instead.

Jorgensen got back on track in June with a “Fight of the Night†win over Danny Martinez at UFC Fight Night 42. Before that, he had dropped three straight and five of his past six, including his first two fights at flyweight.

With the addition, the latest UFC 177 card includes:

Champ T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao – for bantamweight title
Champ Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso – for flyweight title
Shayna Baszler vs. Bethe Correia
Danny Castillo vs. Tony Ferguson
Anthony Hamilton vs. Ruan Potts
Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Ramsey Nijem
Derek Brunson vs. Lorenz Larkin
Justin Edwards vs. Yancy Medeiros
Henry Cejudo vs. Scott Jorgensen
