I think that fans connected with him. Early on when he was a heel the issue was that he kept getting thrown in random tag teams rather than TNA giving the guy a chance as a singles wrestler. When he did turn face and actually start his singles run the crowd were behind him. TNA loved to toy with...
He should never have signed that new deal after his TNA contract expired last year. There was that issue with the TNA/WWE lawsuit but surely he could have found some other work elsewhere rather than continuing to go backwards in TNA.
This is a great move for him and a terrible move for TNA...
