A barnburner of a welterweight pairing will headline the UFC's summer foray onto network television, as top-ranked contenders Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown are set to collide in the main event of UFC on FOX 12, promotion officials announced Tuesday.

"Yes winner of Lawler vs Brown gets the next shot at the title," UFC President Dana White declared in a follow-up tweet.

The announcement means no rest for the weary for Lawler (23-10, 1 NC), as the UFC's No. 1 ranked welterweight contender eyes yet another two-month turnaround after narrowly losing a grueling title bid against Johny Hendricks in March, then outclassing Jake Ellenberger en route to a third-round TKO in May.

Lawler, 32, is 4-1 thus far in his second UFC stint, having also upset Josh Koscheck and Rory MacDonald with impressive performances last year.

Though in Brown (19-11), "Ruthless" collides headfirst against the division's hottest fighter. The owner of a staggering seven-fight win streak, which includes six KO/TKO finishes, Brown most recently weathered an early storm to roar back and defeat Erick Silva via third-round TKO in one of the year's most memorable fights at UFC Fight Night 40.

UFC on FOX 12 takes place on July 26, 2014 at the SAP Center in San Jose, CA. An updated fight card can be seen below.

  • Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Brown
  • Anthony Johnson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
  • Josh Thomson vs. Michael Johnson
  • Dennis Bermudez vs. Clay Guida
  • Daron Cruickshank vs. Jorge Masvidal
  • Noad Lahat vs. Steven Siler
  • Kyle Kingsbury vs. TBA
I'm not against this fight at all, I think it's time Matt Brown got a top fighter to challenge him although I am kinda surprised that it's for a shot at the title, although with Dana who knows.

Robbie is putting in some work this year that's for sure, fighting in March May and July.

Lawler is just a fighting machine. Hoping he wins this one as well. He is proving his worth definitely.

Just... mannnn this is real quick. Is he going for 5 fights in one year or something?

Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler lived up to the hype, damned good fight.

Rumble was a beast, and Nogueira bros should hang them up for good.

Well I spent that minute catching up to watch Rumble Johnson... and DUDE! This guy has had like an awakening. Plus he is in a division that he should have always been in considering his size. Still so hard to believe that he used to fight at 170... just... dang. but man alive he has looked like a complete beast in his last two fights. I say give him Gus in his next fight and the winner faces the champ whether it be Jones or Cormier.

Johnson has been on a tear and I mean his fight against Davis went 3 rounds and he didn't show any signs of slowing down at all. He is like new and improved.

Usually I'm all about filtering out the contenders and doing Gus/Rumble but there's something in me that wants to see Glover/Rumble just slug it out, could be ugly as hell.
