Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a Video Game being developed by Square Enix in Japan for the Playstation 3. The game is an Action RPG (Role Playing game) where players play the rolls of various characters as the games story unfolds. The game is the second installment of the Final Fantasy XIII Fabula Nova Crystallis project next to Final Fantasy XIII itself. Final Fantasy Versus XIII is not a sequel or prequel to Final Fantasy XIII, and will have completely different characters, the only similarity being their underlining mythology and universe. It was announced during E3 2006 on May 8. There is no scheduled release date at this time.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been in development since at least 2005, possibly 2004. The title is being directed by Tetsuya Nomura, director of FFVII: Advent Children, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and character designer for many Final Fantasy games since VII.

Like Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being developed using Square Enix's newest game engine, the Crystal Tools, formerly the White Engine. Tetsuya has said that the gameplay will be much more similar to that of the Kingdom Hearts series, than the turn based action of the main Final Fantasy titles. Furthermore, the game will deeply explore human emotion to the highest degree ever seen from Square Enix. The setting of the game is much more to modern day, while still maintaining some fantasy, such as magic and incredible acrobatics.

Like all of Fabula Nova Crystallis, not much is known about the story, other than the protagonist is a Prince of a sealed off city kingdom, the last kingdom to control a crystal. The trailers for the title have hinted at parallels between it's story, and the Shakespearian story of Hamlet.

Versus XIII looks damn impressive, if I do say so myself. I'm looking forward to see how they'll simulate human emotion and go deeper into it, and I like the dark setting of the game as well. It surely bares some resemblance to Kingdom Hearts; it's a given seeing as it's Tetsuya Nomura and his team. The story has potential, and though I'm no fan of Shakespeare by any means, his dramas do make some very good archetypes for other stories to follow.

Known characters of Final Fantasy Versus XIII

The unnamed Prince is the next in line for the throne of the last kingdom to have a crystal. The Prince protects this crystal himself, as seen in the trailers. He seems practically emotionless, but very aggressive in battle.

The Prince's fighting style is very unique - - and odd to say the least - - and should make for interesting game play. He has a lot of different weapons that he summons from thin air. He doesn't even have to hold them to use them. The Prince has well over a dozen weapons at his disposal, such as swords, guns, axes and spears.

This woman is said to be an unfortunate enemy of the Prince's, as they are in opposition to one another; however, if they circumstances were different, they probably wouldn't fight. The Blond Chick is the only confirmed antagonist of Final Fantasy Versus XIII so far.

He seems to be the joker of the Prince's posse so far, he's even seen giving the Prince a headlock! Not to mention he usually has a smile on. His weapon of choice, which he slings over his shoulder, is the inspiration of his nickname: Shotgun Guy.

Slicked back hair and a scar over one eye, this guy looks like the brawn of the posse. He is also seen headlocking the Shotgun Guy.

Named for his specs, this guy is seen hanging around the Prince quite a bit in magazine scans. Likely a friend or some kind of officer of the kingdom. He's also seen driving the Prince around.

Like most of the other characters, there's just about nothing to report on this guy, other than that we've seen him in a few places. He's also seen attacking the Prince with some potent magic

This man seems to have similar eyes to the Prince, and is also seen at the head of a very large table of an even larger room. Rumor is he is the current king of the land.

The characters now have names.

The blue haired guy formerly known as Prince. His name is Noctis Lucis Caelum. In Latin his name means “Sky of night light” and Noct is his nickname.

The blonde haired girl's name is Stella Nox Fleuret her name is Latin for “Star of Darkness”
