Final Fantasy XIII is a Video Game being developed by Square Enix in Japan for the Playstation 3. The game is an RPG (Role Playing game) where players play the rolls of various characters as the games story unfolds. The game is the thirteenth installment of the Final Fantasy series, but is nor a sequel or prequel, merely a new story, following the broad traditions of the Final Fantasy series in it's gameplay and story elements. It was announced during E3 2006 on May 8. There is no scheduled release date at this time.

Final Fantasy XIII has been in development since roughly 2004. This is known as Square Enix has said that the game was originally being developed for the Playstation 2, but after they created the Final Fantasy VII Technical Demo for PS3 for May 2005's E3, they moved the the project from PS2 development to PS3.

The game is being developed using Square Enix's newest game engine, the Crystal Tools, formerly the White Engine. Information on the game's story and gameplay have been scarce since it's unveiling, but a few tidbits known are the leader character is a woman by the codename of Lightning, and that it starts with a conflict between the floating city of Cocoon, and the world beneath it, Pulse.

The developers designing and producing Final Fantasy XIII want to revolutionize the RPG formula. They're looking at the bare bones of it, the "you go into town, talk to people, go out of town, enter battles" (FFXIII Producer, Yoshinori Kitase), they're looking to reinvigorate that flow in particular. Furthermore, Square Enix is looking to simulate the incredible fast pace of the cinematic battles from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children in Final Fantasy XIII. The Battle Director of FFX is handing the development of FFXIII's Battle System.

The 360 version will start development in 2009.

I'm eagerly anticipating this entry into the series, and I thank Square (damn, really?) for bringing it to the 360, so I can actually play it. I loved XII, so I hope this one is just as good, if not superior. The graphics look gorgeous and I'm glad the battle system is gradually changing, though I still like turn based and so forth. Definitely going to buy this on launch day.

Known characters of Final Fantasy XIII

The main character of Final Fantasy XIII and her name is actually a sham. "Lightning" is but a mask for her real name, and is the code name she goes by to keep her true identity off the records.

She does not like to talk about herself or her past but remains mentally and physically strong and independent. Lightning is well toned and quite the acrobat, as seen in the trailer, and not that surprisingly (based on her portrayal in the trailer) is not sweet. Square Enix has compared her to a noble soldier, as she is one strict gal.

Weaponry wise, Lightning uses a transformable sword/gun.

His name is unknown, but outside the game his nickname is known as Mr. 33cm for the size of his boots. He is said to be big enough to carry two people at once, and run at same time.

He's seen in the trailer saving Lightning from enemy troops as he pulls up on his Shiva motorcycle. He's described as having a wild fighting style, but in the trailer he simply looks to b

I've heard Tetsuya Nomura was told to make the main character less feminime; I'm not sure if it's true, though. Since many FF games feature males with feminime features, I'm confused. I've seen side by side pictures of her and Cloud, and they look very similiar (could be due to Nomura's style) and I'm wondering if it's true. She looks okay to me, though.

Mr. 33cm looks cool; he reminds me of Seifer from FFVIII. The other girl looks like a Selphie/Yufi/Penello kind of character. I'm liking the art direction for this game, too.

I'm staying with the PS3 version

PS3 development time: 2004-2009
360 development time: 2009-2009 0r 2009-2010

The 360 version is gonna use 3 to 4 disc and need compression. I feel safer with the PS3 version.

Also the Vs. XIII and XIII cases will match.

If I only had the 360 i'd get that version.

It can go two ways, SE rushes the 360 version and screws it up or they work fast to make it on par with PS3 version

Lightning is supposed to be a tomboyish, female Cloud version of Cloud Strife.

Well, I only own a 360 for now; WHEN I purchase a PS3, and hopefully it's sooner rather than later, then I'll purchase FFXIII for the PS3 instead of the 360. Since it's coming out in 2009 or 2010, it gives me enough time fo buy a PS3, especially with the prices decreasing as time goes on.

Ah, and thanks for the info. IMO, she seems similiar along the lines of Ashe and Tifa, especially her outfit.

They need to keep the battle system from FF XII. Once you got the hang of the cambits, its was an awesome system. They should also give us the choice to play it as a multiplayer game, similar to the FF games for the SNES.

I gotta say this game looks kinda awesome. And I agree with SP on both points FFXII was unique in it's system. FFXIII looked a like it had a weird kinda battle system in 1 of the trailers...also the PS3 has ports for up to 6 controllers, right? :shifty:

Also 1 thing i'm noticing a lot about 13 is that they seem to be going with a more technological setting than previous FF's...I know they've mostly been one shots so far but does anyone remember in FFX when Tidus was in his own time how advanced it was? :g:
