Real Madrid have given up hope of signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo but have left the door open for a future deal.

The midfielder tops the wanted list of the Spanish giants but, with United having virtually built their side around the Portuguese international, Real are resigned to missing out on him and another big target in the form of Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas.

Sporting director Pedrag Mijatovic said: "Of course it would not be bad for us to have a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, but he is at a great club like Manchester United. I see it as an impossible signing.

"Fabregas is the same.

"We are not the only team who would like to have a player such as Cesc, but he belongs to a great club like Arsenal and it is almost impossible to sign him.

"I am very clear that we are not going to waste time on things which we cannot do.

"We will see what happens in the future. It is undeniable that he is as a very interesting player, but signing him is something that would be tremendously difficult."

Ronaldo has always said it was his dream to play for Real at some stage in his career, but agreed a five-year contract extension with United last year, tying him to Old Trafford until 2012.

They just want a big name star. Whether it be Fab, Ron or Kaka it doesn't matter, since all 3 are at least the ten best players in the world.

Liverpool are said to be keen on Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips and could include Xabi Alonso as part of the deal.

Wright-Phillips has finally settled into life at Chelsea following a troubled start at Stamford Bridge and has become more of a first-team regular this season.

The winger's form has caught the attention of Liverpool, who are reported to be lining up a swap deal involving Spanish star Alonso, but a deal looks unlikely for one of several reasons.

The Blues will want to keep hold of the winger for starters, while Liverpool are set to lose Momo Sissoko to Italian giants Juventus and will not want to lose Alonso as well.

Alonso himself may not fancy the move either after Liverpool accused Chelsea players of deliberately trying to get him booked in the Champions League semi-final first leg in 2005.

this is IMPOSSIBLE as the owners won't spend the 17 million required to keep mascherano.so mascherano and sissoko will leave, with alonso and leiva remaining as defensive midfielders.

This is getting fucking stupid. We had/have the best Centre Midfield and by summer it's all gonna screw up and if this Alonso/SWP deal does go through which most likely won't but still if it does then Liverpool are screwed with Macherano and Sissoko on their way out too. In a way I could actually see this being good, remember back when Henry left Arsenal and everyone said they were gonna be shit, look at them now. I could see that happeneing to Liverpool or otherwise they are just gonna be dropping down the table. I know I should always have faith but it's not a very bright time for them atm...

our football is too stereotyped,it's easy for opponents to defend against us.Lack of a world class striker to partner torres, lack of classy left winger. fucktards owners who are putting the club into debt.Stubborn manager who won't stop rotating.IF we don't qualify for CL via 4th spot and a striker like eto'o or villa is not signed i see torres and gerrard handing transfer requests in the summer.4th spot is all we should aim for this season.Just typing that is depressing:sad:hope we win the FA cup as i don't fancy our chances against inter milan.

^^Sorry, I can't see Liverpool winning the FA Cup 'cause they'd have to get past Bristol Rovers to get there lol. I can't see Gerrard handing in a transfer request because he's all but said he's going to retire and Liverpool and as for Torres he's just kept his head down low and not said anything and I think he is still happy at Liverpool and will only leave if Benitez leaves...

that's bad news concerning torres because with the yanks staying as owners and rafa's much ridiculed [and rightly so] rotation policy this could well be rafa's last season.Don't be surprised if hicks makes a move for mourinho in the summer.

^^I don't think Mourihno would be interested with coming back to England he'll go to Italy or Spain. I could actually (as much as I hate it) see them going for Steve McLaren :(

mourinho knows liverpool from his time in england.he knows the history and the magic of the supporters of this great club.benitez is a great coach. He's too stubborn to admit his rotation policy worked in spain but not in england but he's a great coach.it will take someone special like mourinho, lippi or hiddink to replace him.i think mourinho will be tempted.Anyway if we go for mclaren liverpool will become a laughing stock like newcastle united:)

The only thing that you can hope happen is to have the Dubai company comes in and gives the owners a good amount of money and have them fuck off.

What's the point when you know your thirst for signing players would not be satisfied since the americans need the money to pay off their loans. If the Dubai people come in, they can clear the debt and free money to sign players, and I can see them becoming Abramovich-ish in the sense that he'll probably spend like crazy in the first few years.
