WS Movie Log 2020

Apoho Creed

Making Love to my Demons
I've watched some good ones the last few days. I've never watched Hamilton and I was downright impressed of what I was watching. I should of watched it sooner considering I dig Musicals with Grease still being my fav, but damn Hamilton might top it. Gangs of New York I haven't seen in ages still a favorite of mines as I want to dig into Daniel Day Lewis film history outside of just knowing The Last of the Mohicans.

I watched this last night:

It's from the director of movies like Hush and Doctor Sleep. I've always had it recommended to me, and since coming to appreciate Mike Flanagan's films more and Haunting of Hill House it was only a matter of time. The low budget of his first movie definitely shows, but in a way it sort of adds to the general eeriness and atmosphere of the film. It's a classic case of making the most of no budget and a simple concept. The actors are fairly unknown aside from Doug Jones who I recognised, they are definitely some rough performances but quite decent to say it was the main lead's first and only big role. I will say I thought the movie dropped off a bit towards the end, but other than it had me captivated and intrigued.

I'd give it a 6/10. It's worth watching if you like Mike Flanagan's other work to see where he's evolved, but it's not for everyone. It's quite slow in some areas.

I need to see Doctor Sleep to be honest and I'm mad at myself for not seeing it yet. I remember really enjoying the Trailer why not watch it tonight. I'm on my Disney Original Movies vibe right now though.

You should definitely get on that. I really thought he nailed it, it's no easy feat to follow The Shining and produce such a good film. I honestly was surprised by how good that movie turned out, and Ewan McGregor is really good as an adult Danny Torrance. The only gripe I'd maybe give it is the runtime, but it's not too bad. It didn't feel like it dragged to me.

A few days ago I watched Doctor Sleep on your recommendation and I freaking loved it. Abra out here like a Omega Level Mutant for real. Abra's abilities blows away what Danny had ever dreamed up. Lucky she had Dan to guide her going forward because a person powerful like that could legit could of went with Rose and destroyed shit with ease. Rose should of known this girl isn't a rookie when she pushed her out of her mind when she was in the Grocery Store. So when the final battle happens I thought welp she has no shot at all to get Abra. I knew Danny was going to get possessed when he unlocked on those spirits from their Box Coffins. I don't know if I like Danny dying in the Overlook Hotel seeing his Mother towards the end. The events of the Shining shaped him in some ways good and in alot of ways on the negative side, so you would think he would want to go out in a place that has no negative memories for him. Oh well it was to save Abra for now because it would make sense that more of those types of people like Rose and her Cult would want a piece of Abra going forward.

Glad you liked it! It's a really well made film. Kyliegh Curran was really good playing Abra, I think she's got a bright future ahead of her in acting. One of the better young performances I've seen.

I finally got around to watching Midsommar.

MIDSTHD-01_KeyArt_RGB-FIN_R16_WEB.jpg

Had high expectations for it after seeing Hereditary and whilst it isn't quite on the same level as that film, it definitely stands on it's own well. I think the stand-out has obviously got to be Florence Pugh, quite an incredible performance. Everything I've seen from her has been very good. Hard to believe she's only 24, she's going to have a promising career. The movie is definitely not for everyone, and I really don't think there's been a movie like it. Very slow, methodical and unsettling film, I just really enjoyed it. I could see some people hating this film, I don't think it appeals to the general audience as well as Hereditary, you need to be in the mood for it I'd say.

I'd probably give it a 7/10. I agree with how it stands on IMDB right now.

@The Fourth Wall Think I would agree that I prefer Hereditary to Midsommar. Agree on Pugh too she's amazing. Very versatile too.

Is Absentia on a streaming service like Prime or Shudder? I've heard of it and would like to check it out. Like Flannagan and was a big fan of Hush and The Haunting of Hill House.
