Do you think that a poor ending to a TV Show can spoil the whole series?

For example, I really disliked the ending to How I Met Your Mother but it couldn't possibly spoil the whole series for me which is one of my favourite ever.

Before you added that second paragraph, I was going to say absolutely a poor ending can ruin a whole series. How I Met Your Mother did just that by completely and utterly destroying 9 entire seasons of story and character development in the final 44 minutes.

I'll use Dexter as my example here. The answer is no, as I can still think about all the good things that series brought to the table before it's shitty finale.

I've never seen the Dexter finale, but the HIMYM finale undercuts everything that ever happened in the series and makes the very title of the show meaningless.

In a way, yes.

In another way, no.

Like Brandon said, HIMYM basically threw everything they did out the window with their finale, so that's kind of spoiling it in that sense but can a bad ending ruin a series for an individual? Can an ending be so bad it takes away everything they loved about to the show before? I don't think so. You can hate how a show ends without hating the show as a whole.

Whoops. Don't think we spoiled anything though, but I guess knowing that the ending sucks probably sucks. Don't stop watching though. It's still an awesome show overall. Hell, I'm rewatching through it now.

It is an incredible show so I agree with Swinny, don't stop watching it because you know the ending sucks.

I wasn't a huge fan of the last series but I loved every other series.

I think someone should probably put spoiler in the title because it's bound to happen.

And to add a counterpoint without giving a spoiler, the ending has altered my very opinion of the overall show.

I no longer believe it's a good show and if someone had warned me not to watch it, I would have been spared many hours of wasted attention.

I do agree with Swinny, though, that it's up to the individual. For some they can separate the episodes from the story, I however, can never go back.

HIMYM is done with me.

Really? Wow. I could never feel that way about it. That ending can never take away the enjoyment I got from all the episodes before it.

If I had to make a list of my most hated television shows of all-time HIMYM would top it easily.

The thing about this particular ending is most of the time the ending only ruins the where the character end up...

this one changes everything you thought the show was about and flushes it down the toilet.

Then there's the character development they completely abandoned in favor of doing this. It's hard not giving spoilers!

I can agree with that one, Dexter seasons 1-4 were excellent (1 & 4 being my favorites). While from 5 on it kind of took a dip in quality IMO, but I still liked it and watched it out of loyalty. Sure, the final season and final episode weren't that great, but that doesn't take away all of the greatness that the show once was.

HIMYM finale I didn't care for at first, but now that I've had more time to think about it I'm not that bothered by it. Maybe it's because I didn't watch from the very beginning like most people did, but I'm okay with how it ended because we all should have known it was going to end that way anyways.

To go on what CT said about Sons of Anarchy, I hope it doesn't go that way but I have a feeling it might.

So I went and watched the last couple episodes of HIMYM, and I can see why people dont like it. I guess it would have made plenty of sense just to keep the mother alive, I really dont know how I feel about it
