Ever a man of the people, UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin took to The Underground mixed martial arts forum today to announce that he's alive and well following extensive back surgery.

The Engineer went under the knife yesterday to fix a bulging disc which was pinching his spinal cord, undergoing a procedure which he described during a recent appearance on HDNet's Inside MMA thus: "what they're going to do is actually drill out the bone in my spine to give that spinal cord some room in there."

Carwin told fans that his doctors - in addition to finding and repairing a separate herniated disc - believe they've completely fixed his back injury and that he sees himself climbing back to the top in no time.

"I made it out alive," Carwin wrote. "I am on some heavy meds but I already have my Carwin walk out tee on. I am ready! They found a pretty bad herniated disc while performing the surgery and they repaired that too. My doctor was surprised that I could do what I do with my back in such bad shape. He said I am as good as new now. That mountain top does not look so far away. Thanks to you the UG for the support."
Sporting a record of 12-2, the 36-year-old former UFC interim heavyweight champion recently suffered his only two losses back-to-back, dropping consecutive contests to Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos. He has said that he expects a ten-week recovery.

Look forward to seeing him back at his best. He went on a devastating run early on and he has only lost to fighters that went on to become UFC heavyweight champions so they aren't bad losses to have. Not sure who he will be matched up against for his return and I think it will depend on how the upcoming number one contender fight goes and how UFC deals with the loser of that fight and with Velasquez.

I'd be up for a Carwin/Lesnar 2. I think when he's healthy and ready to fight again Dana said he's going to fight the loser of Brock/Overreem and the winner of THAT fight would get a title shot.

What would happen to Velasquez then? I had thought they would put the Cain against the loser of Lesnar/Overeem to determine the next contender. I don't mind Carwin getting the shot instead but I do wonder what they will do next with Velasquez.

Maybe i have this mixed up hold up.

Winner of Brock/Overreem faces Dos santos. Winner of Brock or Overreem vs Dos santos fights Cain. And Then the winner of THAT fight fights Carwin.

Think that's how it's going, obviously you never know as the UFC has had tons of injuries the last few months. But if all goes according to plan then thats how it's supposed to go.

Ah I get it now. That makes sense and practically sets out the division for the next year.

That seems to be the curse in recent years especially with the heavyweight title. Hopefully not because there are so many great fights that could happen next year in this division.

Yeah, that weightclass is crazy. There's a new champion everytime the title is defended it seems like.

I had thought that Cain would be able to become a steady champion but I was wrong with that prediction. For some reason I don't see Dos Santos holding this title long and I think that the winner of Lesnar/Overeem will take it from him.

Yeah, i thought Cain would roll with the title for awhile after he kicked the shit out of Brock. And i think if Brock gets a shot at dos Santos for that title he's taking the gold, Overreem i'm not too sure about.

I can say that I am very glad that Carwin is gonna be fighting again soon. Always look forward to his fights.

But as far as Cain... I also thought he was gonna be a very dominant champion but... guess not. JDS... I do think can do it. And I also do think he could take it to Brock. He doesn't have the wrestling pedigree of a Brock or Cain... but the guy still has ground skills. And he does have very very good hands. I'm sure he could take it to Overeem if need be... but Brock wouldn't be able to stop JDS either. JDS is gonna successfully defend that belt.
