Obligatory first post but in celebration of Night of The Living Dead finally getting out of Public Domain, let's discuss the 1968 movie that made Zombies legendary.

The rights finally went back to the original group. Just a shame George Romero never got to see it happen.
Maybe I'm not well versed on this, but don't things typically stay public domain once the rights expire?

As of 2012, works can be taken out of public domain. Considering Night of the Living Dead never had a copyright, it's been a legal battle to actually GET the rights.

It's funny that y'all horror fans since we had the Smarks Watch Horror films thread and you guys wanted to change it to James Bond. :lizlol James Bond is great, too, but it seemed like you guys weren't into the horror.

Interesting. Seems like public domain becomes useless. Anytime something becomes fair use a big studio can then snatch it back.

Exactly what sucks about it. Disney has been at the forefront of shit regarding Public Domain laws because Mickey Mouse was supposed to be in the Public Domain YEARS ago, but constant lobbying from Disney nixed that and extended the rights of Disney to another 50 years... You heard that right. If you make something and it becomes a bestseller or blockbuster, you now have the rights for ONE HUNDRED YEARS.

I mean, I can understand fighting something BECOMING public domain if you're still using it.

But, I feel if it is ALREADY public domain, you shouldn't be able to copyright it or what have you.
