All right this may seem like it's supposed to be more in off topic but...

Westerns

I'm writing a report on Lonesome Dove and have run into a unique perspective. Would most people agree that the western is almost always set in America? I know there are some Australlian westerns but when you hear the terminology the wild west is it not usually an American setting inspired by the movies. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to search for westerns whose setting take place outside the US.

If I'm completely off base I'd like to know as not to be an ass.

Well, I could say not having seen or even heard of a Australian Western that my general conception of a Western movie is set in America, This is from someone who lives in the UK so thats from my perspective.

As an Australian I have never heard of an Australian Western. When I think westerns I think of America and I can't think of one western that was set outside of America.

When I think western I think the traditional old school shooter. Small town in the middle of nowhere, bad guy rides into town on a horse and then the local hero has a stand off with him and wins whilst wearing a cowboy hat.
