WCW: THE BEST IS YET TO COME~!

BACKSTORY

There is plenty of blame to go around for the ultimate demise of the once proud wrestling company known as WCW. There’s no need to rehash all the booking blunders and financially reckless behavior that brought about the decline of the company. At the end of the day though, the real nail in the coffin for WCW came in the form of the AOL and Time Warner merger, and the appointment of Jamie Kellner as the new CEO of Time Warner. Following the merger of the two companies, WCW lost its meal ticket: the man known as Ted Turner. The proud owner of WCW for so many years who was more than happy to bankroll the promotion as they brought great ratings to his television networks. The problem was AOL had no interest in WCW as a property, and the new regime had no interest in continuing to carry WCW programming. It didn’t fit their vision for their company going forward and expenses for the promotion were a serious issue. Unfortunately for WCW, Ted Turner no longer had the final say in matters, so he was powerless to stop their downfall.

WCW was quickly put on the market. Although ratings and attendances were not what they once were during WCW’s peak years, it was still the clear cut number two company in America, with a star studded roster, name value and a rich history. The big question though was, who would be willing to take the gamble? In such a volatile business, it would be an enormous risk to invest so much into a company with the kind of payroll WCW had, and no guarantee of a future on television or PPV. Several suitors stepped up to the plate to inquire about a purchase. Some wrestling minds and industry veterans, some corporations looking to expand their portfolios, and some businesspeople who were enticed by the money making potential.

Anyone paying attention to the situation knew that Eric Bischoff was salivating at the opportunity to purchase WCW and retake control, being that he had once made the company the number one promotion in the world, and he had total confidence that he could do it once again. The problem was simply that Bischoff didn’t have the kind of personal wealth to match AOL-Time Warner’s price tag. He was in discussions with a couple of investors, including a television production and distribution studio, as well as a venture capital group, and though it seemed at times in late 2000 that some kind of deal was going to be struck, it never materialized. With time running out, Bischoff had to figure something out - and fast.

On January 11th, 2001, Eric Bischoff struck a deal to buy WCW. The very same day final approval was granted on the merger between AOL and Time Warner, Bischoff finally pulled off a purchase of WCW. In order to complete the acquisition, Bischoff partnered with legendary promoter Jerry Jarrett (who was himself trying to get an offer together for the company) and his son Jeff Jarrett. Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold was a leading investor backing Bischoff and The Jarretts, helping them to secure the finances necessary to complete the purchase, with the agreement that WCW would establish a new headquarters in Nashville. A big sticking point in negotiations was the refusal of AOL-Time Warner to negotiate a TV deal. They were dead set on getting WCW off their networks, which would spell a huge loss in revenue for the company that was going to be fighting an uphill financial battle anyways. Jerry Jarrett believed he would be able to return the company to profitability through several cost cutting measures, and the group were confident that they could find a new network if given time. Therefore Eric, Jerry and Jeff went ahead with the deal, purchasing WCW outright, including all trademarks, talent contracts and the video library. WCW would be allowed to ride out the next 3 months of their TV deal with Nitro on TNT and Thunder on TBS, after which WCW would need to find a new television home.

The clock was ticking for Bischoff and The Jarretts to get WCW turned around. Not only would they need to get finances in order, but they had a locker room in disarray and had to prepare for life after TNT. The full weight of WCW now fell on the shoulders of Eric Bischoff as the owner of the company. Jeff Jarrett would officially take up the mantle of head booker, with his father Jerry serving as executive consultant, helping to guide his son as he took on a role that he had virtually no experience in. Respected veterans Johnny Ace, Terry Taylor and Arn Anderson rounded out the creative team. Vince Russo, sidelined after suffering a concussion, formally resigned from WCW. Despite a good relationship with Jeff Jarrett, Russo was told his booking ideals didn’t align with what Bischoff wanted for WCW. Feeling burned out from years of ups and downs in the business and seeing the writing on the wall, Russo chose to step away from his duties.

Following a complete corporate overhaul and with their first PPV of the year, Sin, on the horizon, WCW had an eye to the future. Some in the company were optimistic about a return to glory. Some were sure the purchase was only delaying the inevitable. Whatever the case, the promotion had a new lease on life. What was to come next was anyone’s guess.

OUT OF CHARACTER

I mean everyone else gets to do a “WCW Survives” project, why shouldn’t I? I will be playing the New Blood mod in TEW 2016, using Jeff Jarrett as my avatar. I will be acting as head booker of the company with Eric Bischoff being the owner. The challenge is simple: keep WCW alive. We are deep in the hole financially and I’ve got some hellacious contracts on the books that I have no way of getting out of. Death is more likely than not. But I’m going to give it the old college try! Stick around and see what insanity will unfold!

The Best Is Yet To Come​

The PPV begins with a cold open inside the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Tony Schiavone and Scott Hudson are on the call, and they start by running down tonight's card, highlighting the main event of the evening: Scott Steiner defending the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Jeff Jarrett, Sid and CEO Ric Flair's mystery opponent! They then pivot the the big story: the purchase of WCW by Eric Bischoff! They say Eric is on his way to the ring as they speak, as he'll be kicking things off with a "State of WCW Address".

Sure enough, Bischoff's music hits and out comes the new boss to a loud, but mixed, reaction. Easy E makes his way down to the ring and takes a microphone, cutting right to the chase. Bischoff thanks everyone in the arena and those watching at home for tuning in and then confirms the rumors. He says he's been trying like hell to purchase WCW ever since he heard it was up for sale. Despite numerous roadblocks and setbacks, he was finally able to do so just a few days ago with the help of several investors who remain unnamed. Bischoff says he's never loved anything more than WCW and he bought the company so that he can continue to bring excitement to the people who helped build WCW into what it is: the fans! At this point the fans are being turned in Bischoff's favor. He goes on a bit of a tangent about the highs and lows he's experienced in his time with the company, and then brings everything together with a final proclamation.

"What it all boils down to is this: the rumors of WCW's demise have been greatly exaggerated! Because what all the doubters and critics don't realize is that this is a company with heart! An unstoppable fighting spirit! Now that I own this company, I can promise you all that from the top down, this is an organization full of fired up and hungry people! Together we are going to come together and bring you fans a better WCW! They say this company isn't what it once was? You're damn right we aren't! They say our best days are behind us? I say make no mistake about it… you ain't seen nothing yet! The best. is. yet. to. come!"

Bischoff leaves the ring to some serious fanfare, slapping hands as he heads up the aisle. Tony and Scott put over Eric at the announce desk and let the fans know they’re in for a hell of a show, starting now with the Cruiserweight Championship match!

WCW Cruiserweight Championship
Chavo Guerrero (c) vs. Shane Helms​

In the back we see Shane Helms chatting with his partner Shannon Moore. Shane lets Shannon know that he’s going to take care of business tonight alone! Moore wishes Helms luck before he heads out.

Helms enters first. Guerrero is next out, and the announcers go over how he defected from The Misfits In Action and has seen his career reach new heights ever since. Tony laments about his bad attitude in recent months but concedes that he’s made a great champion, however he puts over Shane as a rising star in WCW and thinks tonight is going to be his night!

Things start off with some unexpected mat work between the two, but as time passes it becomes more high flying and high impact. Shane Helms is throwing everything he has at Chavo, but because of his experience edge, Chavo always finds a way to bounce back. Helms continually looks for the Vertebreaker, but Chavo has clearly done his homework, and is able to avoid it throughout. Helms does manage to land a Nightmare on Helms Street but Chavo gets his foot on the rope to save his championship! The fight continues for a couple more minutes. Chavo sets up Shane for a Tornado DDT but Shane blocks it and puts Chavo in position for another Nightmare of Helms Street! Chavo blocks Sugar Shane’s signature move though, and quickly snaps off a brainbuster to get the 1-2-3!

Result: Chavo Guerrero wins via pinfall

Flair ain’t talking!​

We cut to the back where WCW CEO Ric Flair is pulling up to the building in a stretch limo (WOOO!). Mike Tenay is on the scene and says he’s going to go figure out who Flair’s mystery man is for the main event tonight. Tenay approaches Flair and asks him point blank: who’s his guy? Flair tells Tenay that he ain’t talking! Flair says the whole point of the main event tonight is that no one knows who the fourth man in the title match is going to be, but Flair promises it’s going to rock Steiner and Jarrett’s world! WOOO!

Big Vito vs. Reno​

Our next match is a battle between brothers. Last month at Starrcade, Reno set up Big Vito and ordered a hit on him by KroniK before rejoining The Natural Born Thrillers faction. Tonight, they finally come to blows!

This match begins fast and maintains that speed throughout. The two men lay into each other with everything they have, as Tony and Scott talk about their upbringing in Staten Island where they were often involved in street fights, sometimes against each other! The match spills to the floor, back in the ring, back on the floor and then back in the ring. Nothing fancy about it, just two powerful dudes brawling it out. There are several nearfalls before we reach the actual finish. Reno signals for his finisher, The Roll of the Dice. He pulls Vito into position for the rolling inverted DDT, but Vito counters out, hitting a northern lights suplex with a bridge to get a surprise pinfall win! A hard hitting match that unfortunately the crowd wasn’t that invested in…

Result: Big Vito wins via pinfall

Money talks...​

In some shady area in the back, we find Mike Sanders talking to Brian Adams. They have a little back and forth, exchanging barbs, until Sanders gets down to business. He says he’s come to Adams because he has a job that needs done, and KroniK are just the guys to do it. Adams says enough with the chitchat, Sanders knows KroniK’s fee. Sanders pulls an envelope full of cash out and hands it over to Adams before sauntering off. From the other side of the screen, Bryan Clark emerges. Adams informs Clark that they’ve got a job. Clark pulls out an envelope of his own and says he got them a job as well, and this one pays better! Adams takes the envelope from Clark and counts the money with a smile. The two men nod to each other and walk out of the scene.

Jamie Knoble and Evan Karagias vs. The Jung Dragons w/ Leia Meow​

Back in the ring, it’s time for an unadvertised cruiserweight tag team match. This one is a feud that’s been playing out for some months on the undercard. Jamie Knoble and Evan Karagias have found themselves partnering up after splitting from their previous stables. Knoble from The Jung Dragons and Karagias from 3 Count. However their alliance remains a bit uneasy.

The match gets started before the bell can even ring with all the men brawling. This brawl soons spills down to the floor and we get dives from both Yang and Karagias that pop the crowd. Eventually the mess is sorted out with Yang and Karagias entering the ring to fight, at which point the bell rings to start things officially. The pacing is fast and furious, with both teams frequently breaking out double team maneuvers and plenty of pin attempts through the early going. Knoble and Karagias are able to get the advantage using their power advantage. Things swing back in favor of The Jung Dragons finally after Leia Meow gets involved, causing a distraction. As things often do in tag matches, especially those of a spotty nature, things break down towards the ends and it’s just bodies flying everywhere. The referee completely loses control and the guys get literally all their shit in. Evan Karagias performs a corkscrew press onto Kaz Hayashi on the floor which wipes the both of them out for a while. Knoble sets up Yang for a fisherman suplex, but Yang is able to leverage Knoble into a small package for the sudden pinfall!

Result: The Jung Dragons win via pinfall

Totally Buff are in the house!​

In the bowels of the arena, a 1930s era Alfa Romeo 8C pulls up, with the engine revving loudly. Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell hop out, all pumped up for their match against Goldberg and The Sarge later tonight. The two men compliment each other loudly and talk about how they’re going to end Goldberg’s career later tonight. And for some inexplicable reason, even though they’re standing directly in front of a camera, they reveal their plan B for tonight in case they can’t take Goldberg: provoke Goldberg to get himself disqualified! They laugh fiendishly and proceed to their locker room…

Ernest Miller vs. Mike Sanders​

Ernest “The Cat” Miller makes his entrance to the most raucous crowd of the night so far. Sanders is out next to heavy boos. Sanders comes down and cuts a promo, stating that he knows what’s best for WCW and he shouldn’t even be having to defend his position. Miller rebukes his statements and then asks the fans what they think. Of course, Miller gets a huge ovation, compared to straight boos for Sanders. Sanders has enough of it and clocks Miller from behind with the microphone.

The bell rings and the party is on. Sanders is in full control for the first several minutes after the cheap shot. Between stomps and headlocks, Sanders antagonizes the crowd. His obnoxious behavior is effective in creating unrest in the crowd. Just in the nick of time, Miller turns the tide! He dodges a leg drop guillotine, causing Sanders to rack himself on the middle rope. He follows up with a swift karate style kick that brings the fans to their feet. Miller takes back control with a fiery series of strikes. Sanders finds himself on his knees, begging Miller for mercy. Miller laughs at having Sanders at the disadvantage. Just then Sanders springs up and delivers a poke to Miller's eyes, blinding The Cat! Miller is impaired but throws a kick anyways, which clocks the referee, knocking him out like a light!

Just then there's a rumble in the crowd and KroniK appears. They're here to do the job they were paid for. Sanders is happy to see them, but that joy doesn't last long as Adams and Clark turn to zone in on him! Sanders now looks perplexed and can visibly be seen saying "No!". KroniK grab Sanders by his shirt and are ready to put a beatdown on him when all of the sudden Shawn Stasiak and Mark Jindrak pummel them from behind! Sanders' allies in The Natural Born Thrillers are here to save the day! Adams, Clark, Stasiak and Jindrak brawl out of the ring and into the crowd, leaving it back to just Sanders and Miller. Miller has recovered at this time and has Sanders all teed up to deliver The Feliner. Sanders turns around and is just able to dodge the deadly kick from The Cat and immediately hit him with a low blow! Sanders follows with the 3.0 and makes the cover as the referee slowly crawls over and makes the 1-2-3 count!

Result: Mike Sanders wins via pinfall

Not so fast…​

Backstage once more, we come upon Goldberg standing alongside the CEO Ric Flair in front of a monitor. Flair replays the Totally Buff segment from earlier in the night where they expose their own plan for defeating Goldberg, and in turn, getting him fired. Goldberg watches with a scowl on his face and a posture that just screams pent up aggression. The segment ends and Flair turns to Goldberg. He says that Totally Buff aren’t going to get away with this on his watch, therefore he has made the decision to make Goldberg’s tag team match against Totally Buff later tonight a No DQ match! Goldberg nods in approval. Flair drives home the point, telling Goldberg that the gloves are off and he’s free to do just as much damage as he wants! Flair laughs and pats Goldberg on the shoulder, walking off as Goldberg snorts and walks in the opposite direction.

The Chosen One speaks​

We pivot over to the interview area where Gene is standing by with one of the four men vying for the World Heavyweight Championship tonight, none other than “The Chosen One” Jeff Jarrett who, as always, has his shades on, his hair spiked, and a guitar resting over his shoulder. Gene reacts to the previous segment, saying it must be music to Goldberg’s ears knowing there will be no disqualification in his match with Totally Buff. He then turns his attention to the main event, and asks Jeff Jarrett what his intentions are. The past few weeks have shown his relationship with Steiner to be a shaky one at best, so will he have Steiner’s back or will he be gunning for the gold?

“Listen up prehistoric slapnuts. You’re talking to Double J, Jeff Jarrett here. Now I know you make a living off stirring up drama, and I bet you’d love for me to feed into your line of questioning. But here’s the deal baldy: this ain't my first rodeo, you understand? I’m a professional. You’re not going to pull none of that stuff with me. As far as me and Steiner are concerned, our friendship is just fine. As far as me and that title are concerned, well I’ve been there, done that, I know what being champion is all about. Tonight I’m going to do what I have to do, and that’s all there is to it!”

Jarrett flips Gene’s tie in his face and walks off. Gene turns to the camera and says he hopes for Steiner’s sake that he has eyes in the back of his head, because that Jeff Jarrett is a snake!

Penalty Box Match
Team Canada (Lance Storm, Mike Awesome, Elix Skipper)
vs.
The Filthy Animals (Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman, Konnan)​

Our next contest is the Penalty Box Match which will feature Jim Duggan as the special guest referee. The rules of the match are fairly simple. If any participant of the match is caught cheating, Duggan is able to send them to the penalty box for one minute, which in theory will swing things in favor of the opposing teams, who will then have the numbers advantage.

Tony and Scott recap the events that lead to this match, mentioning that the feud began when The Filthy Animals graffitied Team Canada’s bus. Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had Kidman pin Storm, but also seen Storm get a submission win over Mysterio. Both the commentators are intrigued to see whether Duggan will call this match evenly, as he has just wrapped a months long alliance turned rivalry with Team Canada.

The match gets going and it’s all pretty standard fare. Lots of trading holds between all participants in the match. But this gimmick isn’t attached to the match for nothing. When faced with some adversity, Team Canada can’t resist pulling some illegal tactics, and we see Mike Awesome sent to the penalty box numerous times, and at one point both Awesome and Skipper go in, creating a 3-on-1 advantage for The Animals against Storm. The leader of Team Canada is able to weather the storm. The match proceeds and to the surprise of the commentators, Duggan does send Mysterio the box when he illegally interferes to break up a pin. The hijinks continue, and members from both teams are frequently going in and out of the box. Eventually Konnan, Mysterio, Skipper and Awesome all end up in the box simultaneously, leaving it to Storm and Kidman to battle it out. The boxes clear, and all four of the men brawl on the floor. Kidman decides to dive into the madness, hitting a shooting star press to the outside and wiping out the whole crowd, including his team mates. That comes back to haunt him as he re-enters the ring, only for Storm to catch a kick from him and lock in the Canadian Maple Leaf! With no partners for help and unable to reach the ropes, Kidman is forced to tap out to the hold!

Duggan calls for the bell but Storm isn’t letting go of the hold. Duggan yells at Storm but to no avail and eventually has to pull Storm off himself. The crowd give a pop for Duggan putting his hands on Storm. But from behind, Awesome clubs Duggan. All three members of Team Canada then put the boots to Duggan, before Mike Awesome lifts Duggan up high to deliver a devastating Awesome Bomb to the legend! Team Canada stands tall at the conclusion of the segment.

The Insiders and The Natural Born Thrillers hype their bout​

Returning to the interview area, Gene Okerlund has all the members of The Natural Born Thriller standing by. He mentions Mike Sanders defending his commissionership earlier tonight and then discusses the World Tag Team Championship match tonight, where Sean O’Haire and Chuck Palumbo take on Kevin Nash and Diamond Dallas Page for the titles. Sanders acts as the mouthpiece of the group and puts himself over for beating Miller earlier tonight. He calls KroniK geeks and says they’re going to live to regret the day they tried to get one over on him. But putting that business aside, he says it’s O’Haire and Palumbo’s time. The students have overcome the master, and tonight is Nash’s last stand! Palumbo gets a few words in, saying that the future is here, and it’s time for Nash and Page to ride off in the sunset. O’Haire then gets a moment to speak and says he’s crazy, so if Nash and Page don’t want to bow out gracefully, they’re going to be in for a very rude awakening. Gene wraps up the interview and says the title match should be one for the ages.

We immediately cut the locker room of The Insiders, where Page is taping his wrist. Nash comes and sits on the bench across from him and the two of them talk about the match tonight with each other. Nash says they’ve never been better and tonight they’re going to shut up all the doubters. Page agrees and says those dweebs in The Natural Born Thrillers are going to find out real quick why he and Nash are who they are.

WCW Hardcore Championship
Terry Funk (c) vs. Meng vs. Crowbar w/ Daffney​

It would be absurd to try to break this one down move by move.

Funk is first out, but he doesn’t even make it to the ring before Meng jumps him from behind and the fight gets underway on the ramp. Crowbar joins in on the fray and it’s one long walking brawl all the way to the back, throughout the arena, and then back out to the ring over the course of about 10 minutes in classic WCW hardcore division fashion. Daffney is screaming in the distance throughout the whole thing. Once back in the ring, Meng dominates both his opponents for a period, looking like an indestructible force. That is, until Terry Funk lands a chair shot to his cranium. But Meng isn’t going down. Crowbar grabs a chair and thwacks Meng as well. Still, he’s only swaying. Funk and Crowbar just lay into him with consecutive chair shots until at long last, Meng collapses after absorbing more chair shots than any man ever should. Funk and Crowbar turn their attention towards each other and have a chair fight, clanging their weapons against each other until eventually Funk just kicks Crowbar in the midsection causing him to drop his chair. Funk throws his chair down and lifts Crowbar up to deliver a big piledriver onto both of the chairs, stacked on top of each other. Funk goes for the cover and he gets the 3 to retain his title!

The Original Madman is here to wreak havoc!​

Gene Okerlund is joined now by the second participant in the night’s main event, none other than Sid! Mean Gene says that since Sid’s return, Scott Steiner has managed to always stay one step ahead of him. Tonight in the fatal fourway, Steiner seemingly has backup in the form of Jeff Jarrett, and assuming Sid doesn’t know who the mystery fourth man in the match is going to be, it would appear Sid is fighting against the odds here tonight. Gene asks Sid how he approaches such a match. Sid cuts the prototypical Sid promo, switching the volume of his voice frequently, going from a whisper to flat out shouting. Sid tells Gene that his approach is always the same. He is setting out to punish whoever gets in his way. But tonight is just a bit different, because at this point, Steiner has made things personal. He says that Steiner is out masquerading as a loose cannon, but Sid is the ORIGINAL Madman. He welcomes whatever chaos may occur tonight and he intends to show Steiner and Jarrett just what it means to be VICIOUS! Sid cackles and rubs his hands together. Gene signs off, stating that tonight’s main event is shaping up to be explosive, to say the least.

Sanders tries to get a leg up​

We’re back in the arena, and now it’s time for our World Tag Team Championship match. The Insiders are out first to some of the biggest reactions of the night. The music for The Natural Born Thrillers hits and the entire stable makes their way out. Tony and Scott are quick to point out that this is a 2-on-2 match, and it’s supposed to be Nash and Page against O’Haire and Palumbo! Commissioner Mike Sanders takes a microphone. He says Nash was a great coach for The Thrillers but they outgrew their need for them and now the students have become the masters! Sanders says he’s coaching The Thrillers now and like all great coaches, he knows exactly when to make a substitution. Therefore he’s going to take it upon himself to sub his players in and out throughout this match as he deems fit, meaning if Palumbo or O’Haire need a break, he’s going to send in Reno, Statiak or Jindrak to give his guys a breather! A good idea on paper. But just then the music of “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair hits and out comes the CEO. Flair is here to rain on Sanders’ parade. He tells Sanders that he might be commissioner but Flair is the man who gets the final say! There will be no substitutions in this match and in fact, if any of The Thrillers get involved, they will be fined and suspended! Sanders and his boys throw a tantrum. Flair confidently struts to the back while the referee directs all The Thrillers besides O’Haire and Palumbo to head out so the match can begin.

WCW World Tag Team Championship
The Insiders (c) vs. Sean O’Haire and Chuck Palumbo​

Now it’s time for the action. Two of the biggest stars in WCW history matched up against the two aces of The Natural Born Thrillers. The opening moments of the match are a feeling out process. The veterans have enough tricks up their sleeves to constantly keep the young lions at bay, and it clearly starts to get under O’Haire and Palumbo’s skin. Nash and Page are confident but cautious when dealing with The Thrillers.

The big shift in momentum finally comes as O’Haire, with catlike agility, counters a whip into the corner, performs a big backflip right over Kevin Nash, lands on his feet and drills Nash with a superkick. An absolutely nutty move for a man of his size to be pulling out, especially in 2001. Palumbo gets his turn to club on Nash, but Nash is able to pull out a snake eyes on Palumbo and tag in Page. Palumbo gains the advantage against Page, which is impressive in its own right. The Thrillers show they aren’t as green as one might think by cutting off the ring and keeping Page trapped in their corner. Nash is dying for a tag as Page continues to absorb punishment. Palumbo hoists Page up for a Tombstone piledriver, but Page manages to counter it into a Tombstone of his own! Finally he has the window of opportunity to crawl agonizingly to make the tag to Nash.

Big Sexy comes in as a house of fire! A somewhat rare sight for this stage of Nash’s career. He uncorks big boots to both members of The Thrillers. He backs Palumbo into the corner and dishes several hip strikes into his abdomen, before turning and dropping O’Haire with a clothesline. He stacks both men in the corner and delivers a big avalanche splash that causes both men to drop to the mat. Nash pulls the straps on his top down and the crowd are electrified! Nash signals that it’s game over and pulls O’Haire up to his feet. He tucks him between his legs in position for the Jackknife Powerbomb, but Palumbo comes flying in and chop blocks Nash, taking his knee out and setting O’Haire free. Palumbo and O’Haire rally together and grab Nash, delivering a big double suplex to the giant! O’Haire heads up top slowly, still in a bit of a fog, looking to deliver the nail in the coffin with the Seanton Bomb. But Page comes in just in time and sweeps O’Haire’s legs out, causing him to crotch himself on the top turnbuckle. Palumbo comes charging at Page, but Page drops down and pulls the top rope, causing Palumbo to tumble right down to the floor. Page in a rare instance here goes high risk, slingshotting over the rope and wiping out Palumbo with a splash on the floor. Nash and O’Haire recover simultaneously. O’Haire swings first with a clothesline but Nash ducks under. He spins O’Haire around and lands a kick, followed by a very quick and impactful Jackknife Powerbomb! Nash falls on O’Haire and hooks the leg, getting the 3 count and securing the win!

Tenay asks Flair where he’s heading and Flair says he’s going to go pick up the mystery man and bring him back to the arena for the main event! Flair climbs in the back of his stretch limo and pulls off…

WCW United States Championship
First Blood Chain Match
General Rection (c) vs. Shane Douglas​

To set the scene for this bout, we get a video package recapping the last several weeks of this rivalry. In short, Douglas is out to win some gold here in WCW and has his eyes set on the US Title. The Franchise has continually been using a chain wrapped around his first to take out Rection. Rection has had enough, prompting this stipulation. A chain will be hanging over the ring. Whoever is able to reach the chain and bust their opponent open with it will be the winner and US Champion.

Before the match starts, the referee is sure to check Douglas’ tights to make sure he isn’t smuggling a chain. The bell rings and things turn physical fast. The fire from Rection carries him to an early advantage, but Douglas is able to fight back and impose his will, using his technical prowess to grind down the one formerly known as Hugh Morrus. At one point, Douglas locks in the figure four leglock with Rection’s legs tangled around the steel ringpost. For the remainder of the match Rection sells the knee, hobbling around for the most part, but fighting valiantly. Rection pulls a ladder out from under the ring and is able to use it to his advantage. Both men seem to be in their element once things take a bit of a hardcore turn. Rection attempts to suplex Douglas onto the ladder, but Douglas counters and drops Rection with a gourdbuster on the ladder instead. Douglas dumps Rection out of the ring, but Rection immediately grabs Douglas by the leg and pulls him out to the floor as well. Rection drives Douglas through the announce table with a thrust spinebuster, but appears to blow out his hurt knee in the process. This makes Rection very slow getting to the ring, setting up the ladder and climbing it. He is able to make it to the top and grab the chain, but Douglas has recovered by this point and lands a low blow on Rection as he is making his way down the ladder. Douglas takes possession of the chain and lines up Rection, blasting him with it and opening him up to score the victory! Douglas is the new US Champ after a solid match with a questionable stipulation!

Douglas celebrates obnoxiously after his win. Meanwhile, the production team makes a point to show Rection being visibly distraught after the loss. Tony and Scott put over Rection, bringing up how impressive he’s been in recent months and the passion he’s displayed as champion. The fans give Rection a big ovation as he heads to the back, beating himself up over the loss of his title.

Back to the interview area, Mean Gene has the World Heavyweight Champion Scott Steiner standing by! Gene says he’s been waiting all night to speak with Steiner and what he and everyone else are wondering is how will Big Poppa Pump approach tonight’s main event with the fourth contestant remaining a mystery, and the question lingering about whether or not he can trust Jeff Jarrett?

“Mean Gene, it goes like this! The only thing Big Poppa Pump trusts is his freaks! Ric Flair has been stacking the deck against me ever since I won this championship and it’s clear to me that the old geezer knows that what I’m doing right now, I’m going to go down as the greatest World Champion of all time! Now Ric Flair knows his old bones could never stack up to the Big Booty Daddy so he’s trying everything he can think of to try to stop me! Sid Vicious don’t got what it takes! Whoever Flair has picked out to be the mystery man don’t got what it takes! Jeff Jarrett? Well he better think twice about trying something with me! You see Mean Gene when you got it like I do, there’s a whole lot of jealousy! People want what I got! They want to be Big Poppa Pump! They want to be the World Champion! But I’m going to tell you something and this goes for all the boys in the back! It’s 2001 and Scott Steiner is the greatest wrestler alive! Any time I walk in the arena, I don’t have to say a damn thing because it’s already known, Gene! Here in WCW it’s all about the FREAKS!” *kisses bicep* “and PEAKS!”

The interview concludes with Steiner holding his title up in front of the camera then walking off the set.

Totally Buff vs. Goldberg and DeWayne Bruce​

Goldberg’s WCW career hangs in the balance. Not to mention, Sarge is sporting a cast on his broken arm, so the pressure is really on.

The match unfolds about how you would expect. Goldberg is dominant, and for the most part maintains an advantage over Buff and Lex. But when Sarge enters, things swing in the favor of Totally Buff. Why there is tagging in and out of this No DQ match is never actually explained. But after close to 10 minutes of having a standard tag match, the No DQ stipulation finally comes into play.

Goldberg chases Luger to the floor, unable to contain his fury. Bagwell clocks Goldberg from behind and drops him chest first across the steel barricade. Sarge intervenes but Bagwell and Luger quickly overpower him. Bagwell focuses on pounding Goldberg while Luger isolates Sarge. Luger removes Sarge from the equation with a scoop slam on the exposed concrete. Bagwell then signals to Luger, who searches under the ring for a bit before pulling out a black bag. Inside the bag is two pairs of handcuffs! Luger comes over and he and Bagwell continue to dominate Goldberg for a minute before dragging him towards the ring post. They double Irish Whip Goldberg, who smacks into the steel post with a disgusting thud. Luger and Bagwell high five, admiring their handy work. They pull Goldberg, who is now oozing blood, up to his feet. Together they pull Goldberg's arms around the ring post and put both pairs of handcuffs on him, trapping him to the post. Just for good measure and possibly for their own enjoyment, they spend a couple of minutes beating on the helpless Goldberg who is barely responsive. The boos rain down, but Luger and Bagwell bask in it, posing for the fans and laughing. They make their way back over to Sarge who is just recovering. The two men show no mercy, slowly and sadistically beating the veteran down, relishing in their role as villains. After a bit, Bagwell taps on Luger's chest and points at the steel steps, telling him something. Luger smiles, goes over and takes the steps apart. Bagwell pulls Sarge over, hits him with a right and then pulls him down, placing his injured arm across the base of the steps. Meanwhile Luger has made his way over to Goldberg, who he slaps awake. Goldberg immediately starts flailing but is unable to free himself. Luger takes Goldberg into a headlock and orders him to watch what they're about to do to Sarge. Goldberg is now shouting but he's helpless to intervene.

Luger makes his way back over to where Buff has the Sarge and picks up the top half of the steel steps. He raises them up above his head and slams them down right onto Sarge's forearm, sandwiching his broken arm right between the steps! Sarge yells in agony and rolls away clutching his arm as the fans let out a shocked gasp! Luger and Buff laugh once again, taunting Goldberg. That's a mistake on their part. Goldberg stares daggers through the two of them, blood still rolling down his face. As Totally Buff continue to taunt him, Goldberg starts to laugh a bit psychotically. This confuses Lex and Buff who look at each other, wondering what's up. Suddenly with one big jerk, Goldberg shatters both pairs of handcuffs around the steel post, releasing himself. Luger and Bagwell are frozen in fear for a moment as Goldberg stands, staring them down. Luger makes the first move towards Goldberg, who bursts forward and nearly splits Luger in two with a big spear on the floor! The crowd is coming unglued now. Bagwell rushes in next but eats a big super kick for his troubles. Goldberg peels Buff up off the floor and throws him into the ring. Goldberg stalks Bagwell and as soon as he gets to a vertical base, Goldberg annihilates him with a spear! He wastes no time getting Buff up, heaving him up high and drilling him into the mat with a big Jackhammer! Goldberg hooks the leg and gets the pinfall, with Buff never making the slightest move.

After the match, Goldberg drops to the outside to check on Sarge who is surrounded by medical personnel. Tony says Goldberg is safe for another day, but Totally Buff have definitely left an enduring impact with their assault on Sarge!

And now for the main event!​

We’ve reached the main event of the evening! The camera focuses on Tony and Scott over at the broadcast table as they preview the main event one final time. They say the mystery man has been kept a closely guarded secret for weeks, only appearing once with his whole body and face covered during a run-in attack on Steiner on Nitro. He was recruited by Flair for the sole purpose of getting the belt off Steiner, whose behavior has been completely off the rails in recent months. Scott adds that Flair may have had the right idea adding Jarrett to this match. Their alliance was formed last month at Starrcade and the sooner they’re driven apart, the better. Scott says the allure of championship gold will surely be too much for Steiner and Jarrett’s friendship to endure. The commentators then send it over to a hype package, replaying the events of the last two months, beginning with Flair bringing Sid back to challenge Steiner at Starrcade. It shows Jarrett interfering at Starrcade to help Steiner retain the title. Then it covers the past few weeks with Flair setting up a triple threat, then expanding it to a fatal fourway featuring the mystery man. We get some sound bites from the promos between Steiner, Flair, Sid and Jarrett and then flash back into the arena.

All the known participants make their entrance. Flair’s music hits and out comes the CEO. He tells the men in the ring that he said he was bringing a fourth man for this match, but he didn’t say when he was bringing him! He says the guy is getting ready right now, but we’re going to get this match started! He orders the referee to ring the bell to start the match!

WCW World Heavyweight Championship
Scott Steiner (c) vs. Sid vs. Jeff Jarrett vs. ?????​

With Flair leaving the participants in the dark about the fourth man, the match gets going. Steiner and Jarrett stick together and go after Sid. But The Ruler of the World hangs tough and gives Steiner and Jarrett a great fight despite being at a distinct disadvantage. The crowd is hot for Sid's fiery offense and equally displeased once Steiner and Jarrett finally take the big man down and start pummeling him. Once in control, Steiner and Jarrett begin taking turns hitting some of their signature moves on Sid. Steiner executes a very impressive pumphandle slam on the 300 pounder and hits a few push ups afterwards. Jarrett grabs Sid's tree trunk legs and slaps on the figure four leg lock for a few seconds before Steiner intervenes, showing the cracks in the team. Steiner and Jarrett begin to argue, with Jarrett asserting that he wasn't trying to make Sid tap, he was just weakening him up. Steiner pushes Jarrett away and says he'll handle it, but then turns around and gets blasted by a running big boot from Sid! Sid and Jarrett go at it for a moment and it's pretty much all Sid from this point until Steiner comes back into the equation with a chop block that cuts Sid down to size. Close to 10 minutes have passed in the match, with much of that time being spent by Tony and Scott asking where the fourth man is, and suddenly the music of Ric Flair cuts through the arena!

The fans come alive and Jarrett and Steiner turn to look towards the stage. Flair struts out in his suit and steps aside as a familiar figure emerges from behind the curtain. It's Dustin Rhodes! Jarrett flips out, and he and Steiner immediately begin game planning.

Rhodes takes his sweet times coming down the ramp. This allows Sid to recover and spin Steiner around to deliver a humongous chokeslam. Steiner rolls out of the ring to save himself and Jarrett and Sid begin brawling again. Dustin trots down to ringside now and immediately goes for Big Poppa Pump. Rhodes picks up Steiner and launches him into the barricade, before charging in and clotheslining him into the crowd to a big pop! Rhodes then turns his attention back to the ring where Jarrett has gotten the upper hand on Sid. Rhodes looks over and spots Jarrett's trademark guitar sitting at ringside. He picks it up and raises it up, getting another nice reaction. Rhodes slides in and sizes Jarrett up. Jarrett turns to see Rhodes and immediately puts his hands up, begging for forgiveness. Rhodes lets him grovel for a while, then makes a sudden turn and smears Sid with the guitar! Jarrett looks dumbfounded. Dustin points at Sid who is still standing, but on spaghetti legs, and yells something to Jarrett. Jarrett warily scrambles over and nails Sid with The Stroke! Jarrett hooks Sid's leg, looking up at Rhodes the whole time to be on the safe side. The ref slides over and counts 1-2-3! The fans come unglued with boos as Jarrett continues to look at the emotionless Rhodes totally shocked by what just transpired.

A new king of the mountain​

Tony and Scott are befuddled trying to make sense of what has happened. They discuss the long standing rivalry between Rhodes and Jarrett and try to surmise why he's just helped Jarrett win the title. Jarrett doesn't look like he has any idea himself but begins to celebrate as boos rain down. Dustin rolls out of the ring, picks the belt up off the timekeeper's table, and slowly walks back into the ring. He hand delivers the belt to Double J and pats him on the back before exiting the ring once again and walking to the back, as fans on each side of the ramp lean over to tell him how he sucks. Jarrett hoists the title up as his music plays. Tony tries to rationalize things, saying that at least the belt is off that nutcase Scott Steiner but there's definitely something fishy going on here. As the PPV wraps up we get a shot from a camera man on the floor, looking up at Jarrett on the corner, celebrating the title win. The camera immediately pans over to find Steiner standing in the front row of the crowd with an absolutely livid expression on his face. Tony says goodnight to all the fine people at home and reminds everyone to tune in to Nitro tomorrow night on TNT!
