A relatively tame first round got much more exciting near the final minute as Tibau exploded through the hips of Oliveira and transitioned to side control. Tibau landed a few short shots to Oliveira's chin, but Oliveira was able to scramble to his feet to escape any more attacks, getting through the round with nothing to show.
Oliveira pressed the action in the second with a solid display of striking before being dumped to the mat by Tibau. After an arm triangle attempt was nixed by Oliveira, he escaped to the feet only to be blasted by Tibau along the fence. A stunned Oliveira held on as Tibau attacked ferociously, eventually gaining back control from full mount. In a matter of seconds, Tibau slipped in his arm and finished the fight via rear naked choke.
Tibau entered the contest after a narrow split decision win over Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 128 in March. He previously dropped an unanimous decision to Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night: Marquardt vs. Palhares in September of last year after defeating both Caol Uno and Josh Neer in consecutive bouts.
Oliveira re-signed with the UFC to replace the injured Bart Palaszewski. He was originally released from the promotion in his first stint in 2009-2010, amassing a 1-2 record in three fights with decision losses to Andre Winner and Nik Lentz. He rattled off four straight wins outside the UFC with his most notable wins coming against Bendy Casimir and Rafael Dias.
