Dallas Mavericks reach agreement with Jason Kidd as coach, Nike's Nico Harrison as GM

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to terms with Hall of Fame point guard Jason Kidd to be their head coach and with longtime Nike executive Nico Harrison to be their general manager and run the franchise's basketball operations, sources told ESPN's Tim MacMahon on Friday.

Kidd, who had two stints with the Mavericks during his playing career and starred on the 2010-11 championship team, has had the support of Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki and others who have been advising team owner Mark Cuban. Nowitzki recently returned to the franchise as a special adviser to assist Cuban in the searches for a new lead basketball executive and coach in the wake of the departures of Donnie Nelson and Rick Carlisle.

Sources told ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Adrian Wojnarowski on Thursday that Kidd had begun the early stages of assembling a coaching staff. Sources told MacMahon on Friday that longtime Mavs player J.J. Barea has had a preliminary conversation with Kidd about joining his coaching staff. Barea, a former teammate of Kidd's in Dallas, has strong relationships throughout the organization, including with Luka Doncic, and the Mavs missed his presence last season.

Harrison, who has been pursued by other teams for front-office roles, has well-established connections with players throughout the NBA stemming from his two decades with Nike. He has a strong relationship with Doncic, having played an instrumental role in the Mavericks star shifting his endorsement deal from Nike to the (Nike-owned) Jordan Brand in the fall of 2019.

Mavericks vice president of basketball operations Michael Finley is expected to remain with the franchise and work alongside Harrison, sources told MacMahon.

Sources: Chauncey Billups front-runner to land Portland Trail Blazers head-coaching job

Chauncey Billups has emerged as the front-runner to be offered the Portland Trail Blazers' head-coaching job, sources tell ESPN.

Billups, 44, met with Portland's leadership, including franchise chair Jody Allen and President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey, in Seattle on Wednesday, sources said.

Billups has a long-standing relationship with franchise superstar Damian Lillard and the two have talked frequently throughout Portland's search process, sources said.

Olshey's history with Billups goes back to their time together with the Clippers from 2011 to 2013. As Clippers GM, Olshey claimed Billups after the Knicks amnestied him in 2011 -- and had him on the team's roster for two seasons. Olshey has long considered Billups one of the best leaders he has ever encountered in the NBA.

Terry Stotts left Portland earlier this month after eight straight trips to the playoffs that included three first-round exits in the past four years.

Yeah I listen to WIP every Morning through the Afternoon when I'm working and Russell is good and all but I don't like him as a player. Don't be wrong he'll be a major upgrade on Offense and not be afraid to shoot but the same time he gives off this lazy attitude at times I feel. He displayed it with Golden State and now with the Timberwolves with no expectations it's easy to lose yourself there. Stephen A Smith talked about GSW maybe wanting Ben but I'm not I'm giving up Simmons for someone like Wiggins who would be just as much a headache. The Curry Brothers want to play with each other long shot that would happen but what about Klay with his injuries I wouldn't mind him at all. Dude could score 30 plus blindfolded.
