This is a guest post by Josh Nason.A former UFC middleweight contender and a former NHL enforcer making his MMA debut co-headline an event in Quebec City, Canada, Saturday, kicked off by an altercation at the weigh-ins Friday.
Patrick Cote will main event Ringside MMA 11 against Todd Brown at a 190-pound catchweight with Cote (14-7) looking for his second-straight victory after three consecutive defeats ushered his exit from the UFC in the fall of 2010.
The American-born Brown (15-3-0-1) also competed in the UFC and is coming off two straight Octagon losses that marked his exit from the organization. He was last seen losing to Igor Pokrajac by 1st round TKO at March's UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann card.
After the two weighed in Friday, they went nose-to-nose in a staredown and eventually began shoving each other. Cote then slapped Brown and the two were broken up. Video of the incident is below.
Headlining the undercard is retired NHL veteran Donald Brashear who will debut at heavyweight against Mathieu Bergeron, the 3rd different opponent they've had for him and someone also making their pro debut. On Friday, Brashear weighed in at just over 238 pounds, while Bergeron was just over 262 pounds.
Brashear signed a three-fight deal with Ringside, a second career after 22 professional hockey seasons mostly in the enforcer role. He is famously known for being hit in the head with a stick by Marty McSorley during a Boston Bruins/Vancouver Canucks game in February 2000. McSorley was later charged and found guilty of assault with a weapon, avoiding jail time. Brashear would return to action but McSorley would never play in the NHL again.
He ranks 15th all-time in the NHL with 2634 penalty minutes, amassed over 1025 games in 16 NHL seasons.
