Rey Mysterio has been released by WWE.

The official news follows our report from earlier today about Mysterio's profile being moved to the "Alumni" section of WWE.com.

We reached out to WWE and were told:

"Rey Mysterio is no longer under contract with WWE."

It's believed that his deal was set to expire in May, but he was ultimately granted his release after extensive negotiations.

Shame, one of my favourite wrestlers ever.

I know his body ain't up to much these days, but he'd get some big paydays in AAA & Lucha Underground.

Kind of upsetting that he doesn't get to say goodbye considering he was one of WWE's biggest babyfaces of the 21st century. That's wrestling for ya.

Yeah if he wants to keep his career going, stick to a lighter schedule and sign with AAA or Lucha Underground and see where life takes you.

Disappointed with how his exit has happened as I used to be a big fan of Mysterio when I was a kid, not been a fan of his for years but I would have liked to have seen him get a nice farewell and potentially even a retirement match.

Yeah for awhile it was slated for them to have a Sin Cara vs Rey Mysterio Mania match to past the torch for top Luchador in the company, but injuries stopped that from ever happening. I also wished he did that versus Kalisto he would of been 100% healthy, but sadly we will never see as well.

Also the fact that Sin Cara was absolutely diabolical and refused to adopt to the WWE style, even if Mysterio wasn't injury I couldn't that match happening due to that.

Indeed. Wished Rey would of had a better send doff, in 2003 he was fucking insane with all he did in the ring, night in and night out. His style was bound to catch with up eventually, he'll be back for his Hall of Fame induction no doubt.

I think it's ridiculous WWE extended his contract and didn't even use him. I'll miss him. He used to be one of my favorites, like in a top five shortlist.

Apparently he's asking $20,000 per Indy appearance

Woah seriously, no way he's' going to get that money per appearance.
He's not but it's just a higher price than he knows he will get so companies try and negotiate with him meaning he will probably get more than he actually should. It's just a simple negotiation tactic.

He's already booked to wrestle in the wrestlingmecca that is Swindon in July

I mock ,but £50 for a meet & greet ticket is tempting.

Rey has signed to wrestle with AAA as part of a World Cup style event in July. He'll be part of team Mexico with Alberto El Patron (Del Rio) & Myzteziz (Sin Cara Original/Mistico).
