Obviously this has been in the news for a while, but it's really come into attention more the last few days with the whole Paterno statue nonsense and now with the school being hit with some very harsh sanctions. What are your thoughts on the whole thing? Do you think the sanctions are necessary considering the two people who are being viewed as the causes (Paterno and Sandusky) are no longer with the school?

Honestly... Penn State would have been better off if they were given the "Death Penalty" than this. This is going to cripple the school worse than what happened to SMU.

The cause was Snadusky but you have Paterno, and two other higher ups that weren't doing anything about it. But the sanctions... definitely the harshest that they could have done. Penn State will forever be tarnished and Joe Paterno's legacy will never ever be the same after this.

This is what should happen to the Catholic church, charge and convict those priests and excommunicate that german fuck who turned a blind eye to it all.

If you are a person who looks the other way while some sick dickhead fiddles with kids, than you are no better than that child molestor. Thats my opinion on this whole matter.

Sucks for the school, but guess what, people in power turned a blind eye to child abuse, burn that institution to the ground.

I'm pretty sure Paterno is taking the brunt of the punishment and blame also because he can't defend himself considering the fact that he's dead.

No he doesn't, NCAA has all the rights by Benoit'ing him from their record books.

He turned a blind eye to child abuse, who gives a shit if he was a good football coach. He didn't do anything while one of his guys were doing unforgiveable shit.

You know about something like that and don't stop it, you are giving silent consent.

Like the Media would have cared how Paterno was apart of it. They would have tore him apart even it was upfront about any of this.

Media made it more Paterno's fault for not saying anything than Sandusky's for actually raping the kids. These sanctions really do nothing at all too, just NCAA trying to make it seem like they do anything. In no way does it help what happened.

Situation is sickening and as much as I respect Joe's career I can't respect him not speaking up about this and letting children suffer all to protect the school's image which got slaughtered anyways. The guy who actually did this is the biggest sick fuck of them all obviously.

I gotta agree that these sanctions do not help the victims, but the fact is that had no action been taken, there would've been an uprising. The fact is that someone has to get punished and has to take the blame for everyone to save face. You're right, Paterno is dead, so he has likely shouldered most of the blame as a result, but he is by no means being used as a scapegoat. He deserves to shoulder some of the blame.

These sanctions were a lot more than "bringing the hammer down", this was a like bringing a nuclear bomb down. Their football program is finished. There is no way any player with an alternative is going to that school anytime soon. I don't feel sorry for them one bit. Its a shame the students already enrolled in their program have to pay for it, but they could always transfer if playing a bowl game is that important to them.

The university itself can suck it though.

And at least they did give them the option to transfer without any restrictions, etc. Couldn't help but laugh at the students faces when they showed their live reactions to the sanctions on Sportscenter. Did they really expect anything else?

I'm sure the students agreed to it and such, but I really didn't care for them showing this too much. They whored out the footage the whole day too.
