Manny Gamburyan books bantamweight bout with Cody Gibson at UFC 178
As expected, Manny Gamburyan (13-8 MMA, 4-6 UFC) is making the move to the 135-pound division, and he’ll debut in the class against Cody Gibson (12-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 178.
The new matchup was first reported by the Glendale News-Press and subsequently confirmed by UFC officials.
Featuring a light-heavyweight title fight between current champion Jon Jones and undefeated challenger Daniel Cormier, UFC 178 takes place Sept. 27 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena.
A finalist on “The Ultimate Fighter 5,†Gamburyan has competed under the Zuffa banner since 2007. That run started at lightweight in a five-fight UFC run before he transitioned to the WEC four four fights in the featherweight division. He shifted back to the UFC in 2011 an dhas had mixed results in the time, prompting a move to 135 pounds.
Meanwhile, Gibson fights for the third time under the UFC banner. He debuted for the promotion at February’s UFC 170 event, where he lost to top prospect Aljamain Sterling, snapping a six-fight winning streak. Gibson returned to action in June, scoring a 38-second stoppage over Johnny Bedford.
