A Tennessee man broke one Loyola University police officer’s nose and ripped an earring out of another’s ear during a disturbance at a Bentley dealership in the Gold Coast neighborhood that ended with the suspect being Tased.
Charles Garrett, 19, of the 1900 block of Alta Vista Avenue in Memphis, Tenn., was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery in a public place and resisting a peace officer, police said. He is being held in Cook County Jail and was denied bond.
The incident unfolded about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Gold Coast Bentley dealership at Rush and Chestnut, when staffers there flagged down police officers from nearby Loyola University because Garrett had caused a disturbance, according to a police report.
When two female Loyola officers approached Garret, he was on his knees on the sidewalk in front of the business. They told him he had to leave, but he allegedly stood up abruptly and punched one female office in the face, breaking her nose and causing lacerations and bleeding, the report said.
When the other officer sprayed mace in this face, he ripped an earring out of her ear, causing a laceration to her earlobe, the report said.
Chicago Police arrived to find Garrett on the ground wrestling violently with the university officers, the report said.
A Chicago Police officer Tased him on his lower right leg and he was taken into custody at 1:47 p.m.
Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
