The WWE was once known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation or the WWWF when the World Wildlife Fund was established in 1961. So the panda WWF already existed, fast forward to 1979 the WWWF (wrestling) became the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) but the Wildlife panda WWF wasn't happy with that, so in 1994 the two organizations that shared the same initials came to an agreement for the wrestling WWF to limit or prohibit the use of the WWF acronym but the logo was okay as they were still using the old golden box letter one. Then Vince ignored the agreement and kept promoting the WWE as the WWF anyway and changed the logo to the red and white chicken scratch one from The Attitude Era, which they weren't allowed to use, as that would cause confusion by consumers as to what they were talking about. As when most people say the WWF they think of wrestling, so the Wildlife Fund had enough and sued them again, which forced the World Wrestling Federation to change the name to the WWE. But it didn't end there, they were also forced to change every WWF logo from the past to retroactively say the WWE as they no longer owned the rights to the name or the logo. They don't do that anymore, the WWE was granted permission to use the WWF logo on old footage but that only applies to DVD or home video releases, or stuff on the Internet, it's still not allowed to be used to promote newer content. So that's pretty much the whole story.
