What Have You Been Reading Lately

JG Ballard - The Atrocity Exhibition (1970) 8/10 Am a big Ballard fan (from the little I have read), and this is another deeply disturbing, but brilliantly thought provoking book filled of adept observations, and inventive writing. It formed many of the ideas which would make up his book Crash.

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Sarah Churchwell Careless People Murder, Mayhem and The Invention of The Great Gatsby 7.5/10 This book charts the history of the writing of the Great Gatsby, as well as many of the real life stories which inspired it, it also gives an insight into the lives of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The...

What Have You Been Reading Lately

After Dark - Haruki Murakami 9/10 This was my first ever Murakami book and I was very impressed and intend on buying another soon. First thing I liked was how it is very character driven, and conversational, very little actually happens, but the dialogue is so well written and characters so...

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Petite Mort - Beatrice Hitchman (2013) 8/10 A stylishly written, edgy debut, with some great characters and a gripping conclusion. At times I wasn't sure where it was going, but it was clever how the two separate plots ran side by side but then came together and made sense by the end. It has...

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Paul Auster - Vertigo Man A stylish tale about the flaws of the American dream. An abused boy is bought from his family by a mysterous master who promises to tech him the power to fly, althrough he does so with very extreme methiods. The book kept me engrossed most of the way through and had...

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Also Infamous with Toby Jones as Truman is a very different take on the character, two excellent films.

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Julie Otsuka - The Buddha in the Attic 7/10 At times a shocking account of what life was like for Japanise women brought over to the US with dull daily routines and a sense of entrapment. At time the poetic, and repritive pros do grate, but it does grow in substence towards the end when you...

What Have You Been Reading Lately

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Masters of Cinema: David Lynch - Thierry Jousse (2007) 7.5/10 This would be a good way to introduce Lynch to people not too famlier with him or his work. There are some nice pictures, and the anylsis and depth of writing about his films are good. I feel there needed to be a bit more on Lynch...

What Have You Been Reading Lately

The film version is too. Another factor was losing that central realtionship which worked so well in the first story for much of this one.

What Have You Been Reading Lately

Jeffrey Eugenides - The Marriage Plot 9/10 The characters are brilliantly written, with some sharp wit and observations. The book twists and turns your expections and feelings as it moves along. The novel works well as a thriller which keeps you guessing until the end, it makes you sad, but...

I am a Boyle fan too, but for me The Beach is his weakest film.
