WWE Backlash

Edmonton, Alberta Canada
April 18th, 2004

Ric Flair vs. Shelton Benjamin
This match is taking place; cause recently on Raw Shelton has been getting the better of Triple H. Not once, but twice in one-on-one matches. Flair attempts mind games early but it backfires as Shelton uses his quickness, youth and armature wrestling to get the better. They brawl on the floor for a bit as Shelton backdrops Flair on the floor before rolling Flair back in, but Flair suckers him in by poking him in the eyes. He then heads to the top but Shelton slams him off the top and delivers strikes but misses a dropkick, Flair attempts to lock in the figure-four but Shelton small packages him for two. Shelton heads up for the corner 10 punches but at the count of 5 the ref pulls him down, allowing Flair to kick away at the knee. Flair works it for several minutes setting him up for the figure-four and he does lock it in but Shelton rolls over, so Flair uses that momentum to roll back over and grabs the ropes for a break. Randomly, Flair brings in a chair but the ref takes it away so Flair and Shelton begin to slug it out. Well that was pointless; Anyway, Shelton connects with a enziguri followed by a heel kick. Shelton begins to make a comeback with Flair bumping as big as possible to make Shelton look amazing. He suplexs Flair into the ring buy again Flair begs off just to deliver a killer chop. He heads up top, but thinks better so he takes out a pair of brass knuxs but he makes the mistake of turning his back to Shelton and Shelton hits the corner splash followed by a flying clothesline off the top for the win. This was much better than I remembered it being, it wasn’t amazing and it wasn’t bad either. Flair’s knee work was damn good and his chops sounded great, and Shelton was good playing the role of rookie. **1/4 - **1/2

Backstage: Todd Grisham interviews Randy Orton. He as Orton is Shelton beating Flair might be a bad Oman for things to come for Evolution tonight, Orton says Shelton has only been on Raw for a few weeks and people act like he’s the 2nd coming. Orton says he’s on a winning streak of his own as well as being the longest IC champ in 7 years, beating Legend after Legend. But tonight, he gonna earn respect and beat down Mick Foley or Cactus Jack whoever comes out tonight making him have to retire. Orton says he’s seen all the footage Of Jack, but he’s goona show Foley a side of Orton he’s never seen before and tonight he’s gonna put the old dog that is Mick Foley down and out of his misery, once and for all.

Tajiri vs. Jonathan Coachman
So this feud started because on RAW one week, Tajiri sprayed the mist into Coach’s eyes. So the next week Coach cost him a match against Christian so here we are. Coach outwrestles Tajiri early on so Tajiri kicks the shit out of him instead. Suddenly as they are on the floor Tajiri misses a kick and he connects with the ringpost. Coach begins to work the knee as he yells at Tajiri he should never had messed with him :lmao Tajiri's selling is good, but Tajiri having trouble beating up coach is hilariously wrong all the wrong reasons. Tajiri uses the good leg to kick out of a leglock but Coach goes back to work on the injured one before heading oh so slowly up to the top, he takes too long allowing Tajiri to place him in the Tree of Woe and hitting the low dropkick. Handspring elbow connects followed by a series of kicks but as Tajiri goes for a monkey flip Coach Hooks his leg on the ropes as Tajiri heads back first. Coach rolls him up with his legs on the ropes only for two, Tarantula by Tajiri now but when he breaks Garrison Cade runs out and punches Tajiri, Coach rolls him up for the win. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Tajiri lost to a fuckin' punch? And a roll-up to coach. *1/2

Chris Jericho vs. Trish Stratus and Christian
Man 2004 heel, slutty Trish was the best. I have to admit watching the video package before the match this match brought back some good memories and this was a real fun feud. Jericho chases Trish around the ring to start before turning his attention to Christian. He gets the better of him for a couple of minutes but he keeps showing off to Trish, which allows Christian to jump him. Jericho hits him with a springboard dropkick to the floor and continues to get the better of Christian until Christian whips him into the ropes but he connects with Trish as she falls to the floor and Christian capitalizes by hitting a front suplex on the ropes to turn the tide for his team. They do some nice spots with Trish as Christian would tag her in to get a few cheapshots on him but as soon as he would attempt to grab her she would tag in Christian to cut him off. Jericho has a real good comeback, until Trish slaps Jericho leading to Christian hitting him with an inverted DDT off the middle rope for two. Later on, Jericho begins to spank Trish allowing Christian to hit the Unprettier on Jericho. Trish is tagged in, but only gets a 2. Christian tags himself back in, but also gets a 2. Jericho clotheslines the shit out of Trish, and he and Christian knock one another out with clotheslines. They begin to slug it out now, but Jericho hits a bulldog on Jericho but when he goes for the Lionsault Christian gets the knees up before locking in the Texas Cloverleaf but Jericho rolls through and attempts the walls on him but sees Trish coming and locks it in on her, that allows Christian to school boy him for two but when they get back up Christian is catapult into Trish in the corner, taking her out and Jericho Step up enzuigiri to Christian for the win. pretty good, not Mania level or even the cage match level but this a good edition to the chapter.

Backstage: Eugene is looking at the latest Diva's special magazine when he walks in the women's locker room. Gail Kim is just in her underwear. When seeing him, she screams, so Eugene screams as well. Molly Holly comes out without her wig :lmao William Regal rushes in the locker room to pull Eugene out. Regal tries to apologize for Eugene, but Kim's lack of clothes makes him forget what he was saying. So Molly yells at him to get out.

WWE Women's Championship: Lita vs. Victoria
This was atrocious, they do some mat wrestling start it’s not terrible but it’s not good either. They lock up after a break then fall to the floor with neither one breaking. They somewhat attempt to pick up the pace as they attempt to do the Lynn/Lita rolling pin sequence which is horrible botched. Victoria begins to work the back and neck, Lita does do one good spot out of the tilt-a-whirl side slam she counters into a headscissors she has a very weird comeback and she’s clearly on her game at all here. She’s sloppy and botched a ton of stuff; it’s just weird to see. And more that I think about it 2004 was a terrible year for her thankfully when she came back in 2005 for that heel run with Edge she saved herself. At one point, in the match Victoria hit a moonsault but Lita rolls in, but Victoria still manages to get a piece of her. The match would end when out of nowhere Victoria would hit the inside cradle for the win. Post-Match: Molly Holly and Gail Kim run out and lay out both women out ‘cause they knew the match sucked. 1/2*

No Holds Barred Match For The WWE Intercontinental Championship: Cactus Jack vs. Randy Orton
Evolution is banned from ringside, for me this was one of the greatest feuds in recent memory and the video package shows how EPIC this was. It’s pretty much; Orton has been punking Foley out. Foley then realized that Orton was right. Mick Foley was a washed and if he challenged Orton for the title he would be sure to lose but not Cactus Jack. Jack also introduced his friend Barbie, speaking of Barbie Orton comes out with his version it that looks pathetically hilarious. Orton also has the gold sparks entrance shower here :mark: Orton’s version of it breaks straight away as Orton runs away as Jack swings the bat around like a mad man but he suckers him in drop toe holding him into the steps. They fight over Barbie on the floor until Orton hits him in the head with a trashcan three times on the floor. Jack comes back with a can shot of his own, before sending him back inside. Jack beats him up in the ring without using weapons for a few minutes even hitting him with a baseballs slide sending Orton to the floor, he follows up with a swinging neck breaker and head up top so Orton crawls away. They fight up the ramp with Orton hitting a side suplex on the ramp for two. Backslide gets another two, before Orton grabs Jack’s hair and slams him off the ramp for another two. Those sounded sick, Orton then throws him into the steps before grabbing Barbie he tries to rake it against Jack’s face but Jack stops it with a low blow and comes back with a clothesline. He takes out Socko but stops and picks up the bat instead, he lets the crowd pick which one wins and the bat does so he nails Orton in the head with it. Orton is busted open now as Jack begins to punch away at the open cut; a series of Foley punch in the corner is followed by the Cactus knee as he picks the bat up again. He begins to rake the head of Orton as he runs away as we get the AMAZING SHOT! Of Orton crawling up the ropes his face a bloody mess and he looks scared for his life, like this is a horror movie. He rakes the bat against his head some more before dropping the leg on the bat which is placed between Orton’s legs :mark: Jack then heads to the floor and takes out gasoline and a lighter. The fans are going crazy. Before he's about to light Barbie on fire, Eric Bishcoff comes out and threatens to stop Backlash if he uses the gas. Cactus throws the gas down and then just uses a cookie sheet. Jack pulls out a board that is covers with razor wire on it, they tease Orton falling on it but Orton throws powder in his eyes and slams Jack into it for two. Orton then places the board in the corner and they do another AMAZING! Tease with a whip it looks like Orton is about to throw him in but Jack reverses then at the last second Orton reverses and sends him in :mark: As Jack is hung up in it Orton dropkicks him in and throws the board into his head. Orton the grabs a bag of tacks and places them in the ring covers a good portion of the ring like a small puddle. Orton the goes for the RKO but Jack shoves him off and Orton lands right in them :mark: Randy facial sell of great pure pain, agony and disbelief is on another level. They now brawl up the ramp and to the back for a split second until Jack brings him back, he throws him off the fuckin’ stage through a table as the ref calls for the EMT’s Jack looks like he’s about to walk away but decides NO! THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH and connects with the Cactus Elbow from the stage, but that only gets two. HOLY SHIT! They eventually get back in the ring, and Jack hits the double arm DDT for two, Orton then rolls to the floor and picks up Barbie but as Jack goes to grab him Orton hits him in the head with it. Orton hits him first in the kidneys and then to the back. He goes to hit him again by Jack counters with the claw, Orton is almost out until he hits a uppercut followed by a low blow. Jack applies the claw again but Orton hits the RKO out of desperation for two. Jack comes charging at him but Orton his a weird version of the RKO onto Barbie for the win. HOLY SHIT! I don’t think I need to say much more, if you haven’t seen go watch it now. SHIT IS AMAZING STILL! ****1/2

Backstage: Ric Flair and Batista are helping Orton to the medical room, when Triple H comes up to him. He says that is what Evolution is all about and he went from being a Legend Killer to being a Legend. Todd Grisham then runs up to Hunter and says Evolution is now one and one tonight and asks him what he chances are tonight. Hunter says he should bet on him and whether they like it or not a victory of Shawn would be sweet but beating Benoit here in his home town on “Chris Benoit Day” Will be money.

La Resistance vs. The Hurricane and Rosey
Well this is the piss break/breather match to allow the fans to catch their breath after that amazing IC match, The superhero team get the better for the majority of this until Hurricane goes up top but Conway catches him and kills him with a sick swinging neckbreaker. The French fucks begin to work over Hurricane’s back and it sucks because they sick more than Rosey sucking down milkshakes. At one point, Eugene comes down as Rosey makes the hot tag and takes out both French fucks. Eugene plays peak a boo with the flags as Hurricane hits a high crossbosy onto both French guys, Eugene gets in the ring and begins to run the ropes. Then Regal comes out as Hurricane hits the Eye of the Storm on Conway for the win. It is what it is. 3/4*

Edge vs. Kane
Edge had just returned when he was drafted to Raw. Before even wrestling for the first time, he broke his wrist :lmao Then 2 weeks ago he and Kane go into as Edge used that cast as a weapon, then the week later Johnny “THE GREAT” Nitro lets Edge know that if he uses that cast as a weapon and the ref sees it not only will be DQ’ed but he will be suspended. Edge is clearly rusty here, he’s not Lita bad but he’s pretty shit. For whatever reason, the fans just hated Edge at this point IDK why but I did find it hilarious that from here to august before he got hurt again he got booo’ed mostly. Edge gets the better early with rights until Kane hits him with a double chokeslam before targeting the broken wrist, Kane slams it against the steel steps and the ringpost before stomping away at it in the ring. He works over it for a few minutes, until he misses a elbow drop allowing Edge to make a comeback he goes to use the cast but ref Earl Hebner stops him allowing Kane to kick him in the face. He misses the clothesline off the top and Edge hits the impeller DDT, Kane sits up and misses the spear Hebner ducks as well so Edge kicks Kane in the balls, hits him with the cast and finishes him off with the spear. 6 minutes of nothing, they just stuck it in first gear and it didn’t go anywhere. *

WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit
Shawn wearing the Montreal ’97 attire is hilarious; Benoit and Shawn take turns beating on Hunter early on knocking him to the floor leaving the both of them to chop it out. They fight for a couple of minutes with Shawn hitting him with a neckbreaker until Hunter comes in to break it up, they have a pretty sweet little interaction until Hunter turns his attention to Benoit throwing him to the floor. We get a pretty cool segment of Hunter and Shawn trying to keep it down to them in the ring knocking Benoit off the apron whenever he tried to come in. Well, that pisses Benoit off enough that he comes in cleaning house with Suplex and chops. Benoit whips Shawn to the floor as =he locks in the crossface on Hunter but he see Shawn coming so he knocks him to the floor and sends him into the barricade. He does it again before heading up top but Hunter cuts him with headbutts :mark: I can’t remember the last time he did that. Shawn knocks Benoit off the top rope before hitting the electric chair on Hunter for two. Shawn and Hunter go at it now, as Hunter hits him with a face buster as Benoit hits the flying headbutt on Shawn for two. Benoit tosses Hunter to the floor as he tries to German Shawn but Shawn elbows out, he attempts the flying elbow but Benoit ducks and he whips out the ref. Shawn gets knocked to the floor as Benoit attempts to lock in the Sharpshooter on Hunter and does but he sees Shawn so he locks him in the crossface instead. OH SHIT! Shawn locks Benoit in the Sharpshooter as earl Heber runs do as he ask Benoit if he wants to quit :lmao Lawler makes a ton of jokes about this, until Shawn breaks the hold to punch Hunter to the floor again. Inside cradle gets two by Benoit as we get this loud “YOU SCREWED BRET” chant. Shawn panders to the way long enough for Benoit to lock him in the crossface but Hunter breaks it up with an elbow to the head. He DDT’s Benoit for two before kicking and punching away at him in the corner, Benoit comes back with chops and sends Hunter to the floor before clotheslining Benoit for two. They trade strikes until Shawn pulls his tights sending Benoit to the floor, Shawn then heads to the top and attempts but he mistiness it so badly that he flies over their head and crashes through the announce table :lmao Benoit looks over at Shawn with empathy allowing Hunter to attack him from behind sending him into the ringpost and then the steps. Once they get back in, Hunter begins to get aggressive and begins to punch away at a helpless Benoit, Hunter sends him into the ringpost shoulder first before doing it again in the opposite. Hunter is firmly in control as he applies the camel clutch which is weird; shouldn’t he be targeting the arm not the back? Hunter continues to be super aggressive with strikes but goes one too many times on the corner punches allowing Benoit to snake eyes him. Hunter hits the face buster but misses the clothesline allowing Benoit to hit the triple rolling Germans. He misses the diving headbutt, allowing Hunter to hit the pedigree but he’s too warn down to make the cover straight away, but when he does out of nowhere Shawn breaks up the cover at two. Hunter and Shawn go at it now trading strikes, with Shawn hitting the flying forearm and powerslams Hunter. He hits the elbow off the top and signals for Sweet Chin Music; Benoit begins to get on the apron so Benoit kicks him instead and Hunter low blows Shawn for two. Shawn counters out of the pedigree by back dropping Hunter to the floor, but as Hunter is on the floor he pulls out the sledgehammer. Shawn slowly gets to his feet and Hunter comes in and hits him in the lower back with it. Hunter then goes to do it again but Benoit trips him up and pulls him to the floor but again Hunter gets the better sending him onto the steps. Hunter then sets up Benoit up to pedigree Benoit onto the steps by Benoit counters slingshotting Hunter into the post and Hunter bumps into the first row out the crowd AWESOME! Shawn signals for Sweet Chin Music but Benoit catches the boot and counters into Sharpshooter and Shawn taps out just before Hunter can stop him. This was so damn good, I don’t love it as mush as the first but it’s still damn AWESOME! ****1/4

William Regal rushes in the locker room to pull Eugene out. Regal tries to apologize for Eugene, but Kim's lack of clothes makes him forget what he was saying. So Molly yells at him to get out.

Couldn't gif that?

Flair probably told Shelton to watch Flair/Sting and copy that.

What's the deal with Jericho and women? From Chyna, Stephanie, Trish, HBKs wife, and some random drunk Vancouver bitch....his history don't look like he enjoys them too much.

Tajiri made Coach look like Brock by sheer size comparison :lmao

That hardcore match made Orton from pretty boy to tough guy, a little baptism by blood does help toughen up characters......Miz could do that and be taken more serious.

Noramlly Backlash events suck, but this was really good, and one of the strongest offerings of that year.

Foley did a even more steller job with Orton than he did HHH four years before.

The triple threat main event wasn't fair off matching the Mania one and did a good job in comfirming Benoit's status.

Don't know about anyone else, but I really loved the battle of the sexes feud and Trish's heel turn. This was when she was hitting her peak.

Under card was solid, the women's match was poor mind.
