The rights for Joker Sting belong to TNA, I think. As such, i would be quite impossible for the character to show up.
Crow Sting is the one I expect to see.

Could Sting even pull off a heel nowadays?

I would love for Sting to come back as a heel. Since he has never been in WWE, he can certainly pull it off if he goes against the Undertaker for the streak. They can play the angle that he has never been in the WWE and that it was his choice to never be in the WWE Universe. Then play the role of, I'm that guy who could have came in and beat your best because I beat your best when they defected to WCW. He could have came in at anytime and been a legit threat.
