I think that the article is wrong. I see two problems with it first off did anyone actually think these movies would do all that great? The budgets were far to big for what always read like bad movies. So the guy green lighting these budges needs canned.

Two in Spielberg and lucas' original statement said that those big blockbusters would be $20 tickets while smaller films woudl be like $4. This actually seems to prove the opposite if these big movies are flopping and the small movies are doing well this should cement that all movies stay the same price.

Now if these blockbuster were excelling and the lower budgets weren't doing shit that would make since to change ticket prices. But wait, we already have that system it's the big budget and the indy movie. While they still remain the same price they are obviously leagues apart.

It's "huge" news now because of the fact it's coming from Spielberg and Lucas... Which is more than a little ironic as they are responsible for the Summer Blockbuster really.

Let's be real, if ONE movie smashes box office records, all this talk goes away faster than Pauly Shore comeback.

This has been happening for decades, a bunch of high budget movies failing isn't some new phenomenon. There will always be big budget movies that fail and small budget movies that thrive. The major studios will continue to rely on sequels and franchises to put money in the bank and will be more reluctant to fund once off movies but there are plenty of other studios that fulfil that niche.

That separate pricing structure kind of already exists thanks to 3D and IMAX. The big blockbusters get an extra bump thanks to increased ticketing prices from those viewings whereas a small budget film can only sell tickets at 2D prices.
