Well since it was made in 2006 it stands to reason that they were expecting it to do well and then continue with it from there. However, Warner Brothers was disappointed with its box office take ($391 million worldwide) and scrapped the planned sequel (set for a 2009 release). It's not like they knew they were going to be rebooting it seven years later anyway.

Now if we look at what's happened in comic book films since then, we can see that Christopher Nolan has made Warner Brothers a shit ton of money with his Dark Knight trilogy. Given that, there's no reason why they wouldn't expect him to be able to do the same for Superman (although he's producing, not directing) but they are probably hoping for another trilogy so the reboot is a logical move. Plus as I said, its been more than 30 years so it'll come across fresher than Spiderman did.

Fuji, I was on comingsoon.net and they had Spiderman 2 and 3 listed two years ago when they started the script for the first one. Don't argue with me on this.

Also, the next Spiderman reboot in 2024 is already announced with the second and third released in 2026 and 2028.
